Heartwood by Rylie Martin: A Brilliant Six-Poem Journey Through Heartbreak and Self-Reclamation

Some relationships leave behind more than memories. They reshape the inner landscape, changing how a person understands love, loss, and the difficult journey back to the self. In Heartwood, author Rylie Martin enters that emotional territory with honesty, warmth, and a deep awareness of the natural world.

Six Poems Connected by a Shared Emotional Journey

Heartwood is a collection of six interconnected poems that examine heartbreak, attachment, anger, memory, and recovery. Each poem contributes to a larger emotional narrative, allowing the collection to feel focused and complete. Together, they trace what happens when a relationship once believed to be permanent reaches its end.

Rylie presents heartbreak as an experience that unfolds gradually. Longing may exist beside resentment. Tenderness can remain even when trust has weakened. Silence, uncertainty, and the desire to be chosen all become part of the speaker’s internal struggle.

The collection moves through recognizable stages of grief, beginning with attachment and protest before arriving at reflection and acceptance. This progression gives the poems a natural rhythm. Readers are invited to witness an emotional transformation taking place across the collection, one honest realization at a time.

At its center, Heartwood asks a powerful question: How can someone love deeply while preserving a clear sense of self? The poems explore the emotional cost of disappearing inside a relationship and the courage required to reclaim an identity afterward. The answers remain personal and open, giving readers space to consider their own experiences.

Nature Gives Heartbreak a Physical Form

One of the collection’s most compelling qualities is its use of natural imagery. Tree rings, geodes, mountains, rivers, forests, weather, wildlife, and borrowed light help make complicated emotions feel tangible. These images give shape to feelings that can otherwise remain difficult to explain.

The title carries special significance. Heartwood is the dense inner portion of a tree that provides strength and structural support. In the collection, pain becomes part of that inner foundation. It remains within a person’s history, much like the oldest wood inside a living tree, and contributes to the strength that keeps them standing.

This idea gives the collection a sense of hope without rushing the healing process. Recovery isn’t presented as forgetting the relationship or erasing its influence. The poems suggest that an experience can end while retaining meaning. Something temporary can still have been sincere, valuable, and true.

Everyday objects left behind also carry emotional weight. Familiar belongings can hold entire histories, becoming quiet reminders of shared routines and imagined futures. Through these details, Rylie captures how loss often appears in ordinary moments. A room, a possession, or a certain quality of light may suddenly bring the past close again.

Her landscapes also reflect the speaker’s changing emotional state. Rivers suggest movement, mountains evoke endurance, and forests contain both uncertainty and shelter. This connection between the inner life and the physical world adds depth to the poems while preserving their intimacy.

A Collection for Readers Finding Their Way Home

Heartwood will resonate with readers who’ve loved deeply and struggled to release a future they once considered certain. Its themes are personal, yet widely recognizable. Many people understand the ache of unanswered questions, the longing to feel chosen, and the confusing persistence of affection after separation.

The collection also recognizes anger as a meaningful part of grief. Anger can reveal where boundaries were crossed, where needs remained unmet, or where someone gave away too much of themselves. By allowing this feeling to appear alongside sorrow and tenderness, the poems create a fuller portrait of emotional recovery.

Acceptance arrives gradually. It develops through reflection, self-recognition, and the understanding that moving forward doesn’t require denying what came before. The former relationship continues to shape the speaker, though it no longer defines the entire path ahead.

What Remains Can Become Strength

Heartwood offers a thoughtful portrait of love’s aftermath and the slow return to personal wholeness. Through vivid landscapes and emotionally direct poetry, the collection honors what was lost while making room for what may still grow.

These six poems remind readers that healing doesn’t make the past meaningless. The heart carries its history forward, and sometimes the deepest wounds become part of the strength that supports a new beginning.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is Rylie Martin, and I am a writer, poet, educator, and traveler based in Columbus, Ohio. I work in literacy education while also writing and independently publishing books inspired by travel, relationships, grief, identity, and belonging.

I am the author of the travel memoirs Malu and Temporary Belongings, as well as the poetry collection Heartwood. In addition to publishing, I share my work through live poetry readings, social media, and my website. My goal is to create writing that feels honest, emotionally resonant, and deeply connected to place.

Please tell us about your story and journey.

Writing has always been one of the main ways I understand my experiences. My journey as an author grew from travel, teaching, and the desire to preserve moments that might otherwise disappear.

My first book, Malu, was inspired by walking more than 400 miles across Portugal and Spain on the Camino de Santiago. That journey challenged me physically and emotionally, but it also gave me a greater understanding of independence, connection, and the meaning of home. Temporary Belongings explores the experiences that led me toward that journey and the people and places that shaped me along the way.

My newest collection, Heartwood, was written during a period of heartbreak and major personal change. The poems move through longing, protest, grief, reflection, and acceptance. Nature became the language through which I could express emotions that were sometimes difficult to explain directly.

My writing journey has not followed a traditional path. I have balanced creating books with teaching, traveling, performing at open mics, and learning how to promote my work independently. Each project has helped me become more confident in my voice and more willing to share vulnerable work with others.

What strategies helped you become successful in your journey?

One of the most important strategies has been allowing myself to begin before I feel completely ready. Writing a book, publishing it, or reading a poem aloud can feel intimidating, but confidence often comes after taking the first step rather than before it.

Consistency has also been essential. I try to keep writing, revising, sharing, and connecting with readers even when progress feels slow. Small actions—attending a reading, posting a video, giving someone a business card, or revising one page—can gradually create meaningful opportunities.

Thank you so much, Rylie Martin, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
