This genetic condition affects the shape and function of red blood cells. Instead of moving smoothly through blood vessels, sickled cells can cause painful blockages. For many individuals with the condition, pain crises can appear suddenly and bring overwhelming discomfort. There are also risks involving organ damage, infections, and long-term complications.
Carlos faced his first crisis at only 10 months old. His grandmother Crystal remembers those early moments clearly. She describes the worry and uncertainty the family felt as they watched a tiny child go through intense pain without fully understanding why. By the time Carlos reached his first birthday, he had been officially diagnosed and began long-term care at Dayton Children’s Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Mukund Dole.
