Everyone is a Consultant: Building Business Relationships That Truly Connect
Dr. Dorothy Leone‘s book Everyone is a Consultant makes a refreshing claim: consulting isn’t limited to professionals with official titles. Every coach, entrepreneur, healer, executive, or individual trying to make an impact is already a consultant in their own right. The heart of this idea is simple. Real consulting is less about delivering flashy ideas and more about building trust through genuine, personal relationships.
The Power of Listening with Intention
One of the strongest lessons in Dr. Leone’s book centres on listening. She describes it as more than waiting for your turn to speak. Listening, when practiced with full attention, becomes a powerful tool. It invites empathy, understanding, and stronger bonds. Instead of being passive, it’s a skill you can actively cultivate.
Dr. Leone shares how tuning into what people are truly saying uncovers needs that aren’t always spoken aloud. This creates a deeper sense of connection and shows others that their concerns matter. For a consultant, whether in business or in daily interactions, that’s the foundation of loyalty. Listening opens doors to conversations that go beyond surface-level exchanges and helps form relationships that last.

Trust as the Currency of Success
Everyone is a Consultant points out a truth that resonates across industries: people don’t buy services, they buy relationships. Trust becomes the most valuable currency in any business interaction. When clients or colleagues feel they can rely on you, they’re more likely to remain engaged for the long term.
Dr. Leone emphasizes that authenticity is essential. You can’t fake personal rapport, and attempts to do so usually backfire. Instead, she encourages readers to focus on meaningful connections by showing up with integrity. Simple actions like remembering details about someone’s goals or following through on small commitments create trust that can’t be bought through traditional marketing or sales techniques.
The book includes practical exercises and examples that illustrate how to shift from transactional thinking to relationship-centered practice. This change brings more satisfaction because you’re working from a place of honesty and care.
Practical Tools for Everyday Relationships
Beyond theory, Dr. Leone equips readers with actionable tools. She includes reflection exercises to help readers notice patterns in their communication. These exercises encourage you to ask: Are you truly listening, or are you waiting to respond? Do your words align with the intention to serve?
Real-life scenarios throughout the book make these concepts practical. You’ll see how authentic conversations with clients, colleagues, or partners can transform professional interactions. Speaking with intention, tuning in with focus, and responding with clarity aren’t abstract ideals. They’re habits anyone can practice. Over time, these habits turn into a style of consulting that feels natural and deeply human.
The message is clear: the strongest business relationships are personal. By treating each conversation as an opportunity to connect, you set yourself apart in ways no marketing strategy can replicate.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Dr. Dorothy Leone, and I help people turn business into connection. I’m a speaker, coach, and author of Everyone is a Consultant, a book designed to revolutionize the way we build professional relationships—by making them more human. My work focuses on trust, presence, and deep listening. Whether I’m leading a workshop, consulting with organizations, or mentoring new consultants, my goal is always the same: to help people connect with intention and lead with empathy.
Please tell us about your story/journey.
My journey began working with people, day in and day out. But what I began to notice was extraordinary: the people who had the most influence weren’t always the loudest or the smartest—they were the ones who made you feel heard. Over the years, I studied behavioral psychology, emotional intelligence, and leadership communication. I realized that business success is less about your pitch and more about your presence, less about selling and more about serving. That’s when the idea for Everyone is a Consultant was born.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The first strategy was learning to listen like it matters—because it does. Listening without agenda, without judgment, and without waiting for your turn to speak is a superpower. I’ve built entire business relationships simply by being the first person to really hear someone. The second is consistency. Trust is built over time. The third is reflection. Self-awareness allowed me to grow faster and serve better.
Any message for our readers
Yes—your presence is your power. You can grow a thriving consulting business by doing what others don’t. If you are a coach, an advisor, a service provider, or something else entirely, remember that your ability to connect authentically is more valuable than your résumé. People remember how you made them feel.
You already have everything you need to build long-term, meaningful business relationships. This book is just here to remind you of that—and to guide you as you put it into practice.
Thank you so much, Dr. Dorothy Leone, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
