Disney has always been synonymous with magic, wonder, and unforgettable stories. But beyond the iconic castles and beloved characters lies a vibrant tapestry of fan communities that add their own sparkle to the Disney experience. In his latest book, Once Upon a Fandom: Disney’s Hidden Subcultures and Fan Groups, author Brian Rosta invites readers to step behind the curtain and explore these enchanting worlds.
A Journey Through 25 Unique Subcultures
Brian Rosta takes us on an immersive tour of 25 distinct Disney subcultures that many park-goers might not even know exist. From the fashion-forward Disneybounders, who creatively dress in outfits inspired by their favorite characters, to the enthusiastic Pin Traders swapping collectible pins like treasured secrets, each group brings a unique flair to the parks.
Ever heard of the Dapper Day Enthusiasts? These fans turn back the clock by donning vintage attire, transforming the parks into a scene straight out of the 1950s. Then there are the RunDisney participants, who combine their love for Disney with fitness, racing through courses that wind around Cinderella’s Castle and under the watchful eye of Mickey himself.
Rosta doesn’t just list these groups; he dives deep into their histories, traditions, and the passion that fuels them. Each chapter is peppered with nostalgic anecdotes and little-known Disney facts that make the magic feel all the more real.

Our journey into the heart of Disney fandom began when my wife and I decided to relocate to Orlando. We wanted to live closer to the parks and immerse ourselves in the subcultures we’ve admired for years. Moving here has allowed us to meet people from all walks of life who share a deep love for Disney. As an introvert, I’ve found that connecting with these communities has been both inspiring and energizing, as it’s a space where passion and creativity are celebrated. Writing Once Upon a Fandom was a natural next step in sharing these experiences and stories with others.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Several strategies have helped me along the way:
• Curiosity and Observation: I’ve always been fascinated by people and their stories. Spending time in the parks and observing the unique subcultures helped me gather insights and connect with the communities featured in the book.
• Passion for Storytelling: My love for Disney and my background in education have allowed me to craft a narrative that is both informative and engaging, making these fan groups accessible to a wider audience.
• Building Connections: Engaging with Disney fans—whether through Dapper Day events, pin trading, or casual conversations in the parks—has deepened my understanding of these subcultures and enriched the book.
• Commitment to Authenticity: I wanted to honor the creativity and dedication of the Disney fandom, so I approached each subculture with respect, curiosity, and a genuine desire to learn.
