Author Tom Albright’s ‘The Cassandra Unit’ Captures the Essence of True Investigative Journalism

If you’re a fan of gripping thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat, then “The Cassandra Unit” is a must-read. This novel by Tom Albright introduces us to Clark Westfield, an investigative reporter whose dedication to uncovering the truth leads him into a labyrinth of secrets and moral dilemmas.

Meet Clark Westfield: The Relentless Investigator

Clark Westfield isn’t your average journalist. Growing up in New Jersey during the ’70s and ’80s, he was a sponge for pop culture and world events, which fueled his passion for journalism. His career has been nothing short of stellar—two Pulitzer Prizes and a reputation that makes even the most guarded sources open up. But success hasn’t made the world any less complicated for Clark. He knows that power can corrupt, and people don’t always do the right thing.

In “The Cassandra Unit,” Clark faces one of his most challenging assignments yet. He’s set to interview a convicted murderer up for parole—a case that’s haunted him since childhood. Using his father’s name to gain access, Clark delves into the dark history of a crime scene set in the abandoned iron mines of Harriman State Park. What he uncovers is a web of secrets as intricate and unpredictable as the mine tunnels themselves. Caught in a three-way trap, Clark must choose between preserving his father’s reputation, possibly freeing a child murderer, and maintaining the career he’s dedicated his life to.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.

My name is Tom Albright; I am a mid-life New Jersey-born author who had a career in reporting and media relations that inspired The Adventures of Clark Westfield thriller series.  I hope to take readers on journeys through topics, places, and people who intrigue me and hold enigmatic appeal.  The many layers of the mysteries and adventures Clark pursues are intertwined with the twilight of journalism and the golden age of investigative reporting. I have written four of the first five novels in the series.

Please tell us about your book.

The Adventures of Clark Westfield should be a familiar world to Gen Xers who grew up in the NYC area.  As one of the last of the golden generation of investigative reporters, middle-aged Clark grew up in New Jersey in the 1970’s and 1980s. Like most smart kids, he was a sponge for pop culture and world events.  Clark’s passion for journalism was religious in its devotion, and the pursuit of the news as a way to find truth was a vocation he held with deep conviction. After decades of breaking crucial stories about the highest levels of power and politics, Clark’s success has made him a celebrity reporter and a star in the industry. His writing has won two Pulitzer Prizes, among countless additional accolades.

And while his career trajectory eventually eclipsed any imposter syndrome, it hasn’t helped clarify the world any further.  People in power still behave badly. Corruption still rises to the institutional level, and people still hurt one another intentionally.  But humans are inherently flawed creatures, and accepting the world as it is can be a daunting process for deep thinkers.

Clark’s adventures will take you through situations unique to our point in our natural history, as well as scenarios that have always threaded humanity in fundamental ways.  As he explores the major news topics that are the set design for modern times, he continuously uncovers very uncomfortable questions and even more uncomfortable truths.  Joining Clark on his adventures gives you a spot on his team of deft investigative journalists whose sole purpose, drive, and passion are asking the right questions.

The Cassandra Unit

Clark has to interview a murderer up for parole.  The case has haunted him since he found the files as a child, and he opportunistically used his father’s name to access the first interview.  The murderer persuades Clark to investigate the mine, which was the crime scene. The secrets and twists Clark discovers are as complicated and unpredictable as the network of abandoned iron mines in Harriman St. Park.   Clark is caught in a three-way trap and must choose between preserving his father’s reputation, possibly letting a child murderer go free, and keeping the job he spent his life perfecting.

Please tell us about your journey.

I have always been inspired by the great thriller writers who define the genre – Tom Clancy, Stephen King, and Michael Crichton.  People may recognize the character names in the series are towns and exits around where I live. I would drive under the exit sign for the town of Clark and Westfield and always be writing in my head and intending to one day bring him to life. In 2020, during the pandemic, when all you could do for fun was go hiking far into the woods, I discovered the abandoned iron mine that is described in the book.  I kept going back to it and picturing what Clark Westfield would think and what the backstory would be, all while exploring the mine.  In 2022, I finished the first book and published the Cassandra Unit.  I chose complicated global problems that keep me awake at night as plots for the subsequent adventures.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Finding a consistent writing routine is essential – and I don’t mean you have to be in the same place at the same time each day, but rather that the writing takes priority over all non-life-threatening obligations on your daily schedule.  Once you get the groove down, you can get the books done.

Another strategy I think is important is to have one person that you speak to as the story is being written who is familiar enough with you and the books to be a good sounding board and on-site referee.  Like everyone writing books, I would arrive at points in the story where I simply didn’t know what should happen next, and each time, a conversation with my trusted ally/sounding board revealed the next move.

Lastly and most importantly, is to just keep going – stopping isn’t an option.

Any message for our readers

There is no shortage of great thriller novels, many brilliant in their complexity and details. I write with a deliberate overarching theme –   I am hoping my readers will see the critical role investigative reporting plays in our lives and why we need investigative journalists with a sense of mission at their job.  I also want to paint a picture of a world that isn’t always as it appears, with all kinds of undercurrents, power plays, and agendas percolating just below the surface. I want the readers to understand that its heroes, like Clark, are their field guides in such a confusing place.  If you show up awaiting Clark’s next adventure, he will show up for you.

Thank you so much, Tom, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
