In a world where stories of struggle and triumph are often left untold, T.J. Kaiwa’s “Set Apart – To be Loved” emerges as a beacon of hope and resilience. This book is not just a memoir; it’s an invitation to embark on a deeply personal journey towards healing and understanding. Kaiwa’s narrative, rooted in her own experiences through the foster care system, offers a unique perspective on overcoming adversity and finding love in the most unexpected places.
Challenges and Triumphs
T.J. Kaiwa’s journey through life has been anything but ordinary. From the tender age of five, she navigated the complexities of the foster care system, finding herself in fourteen different foster homes and shelters before reaching her mid-teens. Each move, each new beginning, brought its own set of challenges and lessons. Yet, rather than succumbing to the despair that could easily have engulfed her, Kaiwa chose a different path—one of reflection, resilience, and ultimately, guidance for others.
“Set Apart – To be Loved” delves into the heart of what it means to grow up without the traditional bonds of parental affection. It raises poignant questions about the human capacity for love and nurturing, even in the absence of its most expected sources. Kaiwa’s reflections on her life’s challenges are not just recollections but serve as a mirror for readers to confront their own difficult experiences.
A Guide for the Heart and Soul
What sets this book apart is its profound understanding of healing as a journey rather than a destination. Kaiwa intertwines her narrative with writing prompts and reflections, encouraging readers to engage actively with their own paths toward healing. These moments of introspection are designed not just to revisit past wounds but to initiate a process of self-discovery and reconciliation with one’s own story.
Beyond its autobiographical elements, “Set Apart – To be Loved” is a testament to the power of faith and self-love. Kaiwa’s reliance on divine love as a source of strength and transformation is a recurring theme throughout the book. This faith, combined with a relentless belief in the possibility of personal growth, offers a compelling narrative for anyone facing their own battles.
For Every Soul Seeking Solace
Kaiwa’s work transcends the boundaries of a mere self-help book. It is a companion for those in the throes of their struggles, regardless of their age, gender, or background. It speaks to teenagers grappling with identity, adults navigating life’s unpredictabilities, and seniors reflecting on their journeys. The book’s inclusive approach resonates with a wide audience, from those firm in their faith to skeptics, from individuals working on personal development to those supporting others in their quests for healing.
“Set Apart – To be Loved” is more than a memoir or a self-help guide; it’s a lifeline thrown into the turbulent seas of human experience. It’s a declaration that, no matter the depths of our struggles, healing is within our reach. Kaiwa’s story, marked by her mother’s mental health challenges and her own resilience in the face of adversity, is a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s capacity to overcome and grow.

We had the pleasure of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us about what it is that you do.
Hello, I’m Tamara Kaiwa, an educator and founder of a nonprofit organization, passionately working towards removing the stigma attached to mental health issues.
Please tell us about your Book.
My book narrates my personal journey through the foster care system between the ages of 5 and 14, during which I was placed in 14 different foster homes and shelters. It’s a reflection of my life’s challenges and how they inspired me to guide others toward healing. The book incorporates writing prompts and reflections to encourage readers to confront their difficult experiences and embark on a healing journey through writing.
Please tell us about your journey.
I’ve experienced firsthand the struggles associated with my mother’s mental illness and her life on the streets. Her rejection and abuse deeply affected me until I found solace and healing in God’s love. I believe that despite the pain of traumatic experiences, embracing spiritual healing allows us to lead fulfilling lives, serve as beacons of hope for others, and help them navigate their adversities.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
My faith has been my steadfast support. Becoming a mother made me introspect about the absence of maternal love in my own life, motivating me to heal for my daughter’s sake. Writing this book during my pregnancy was a step towards healing; now, as my daughter approaches her fourth birthday, I recognize the importance of prayer, fasting, being led by God, and a supportive community in the healing process. It’s essential to have a safe space for emotional expression, as healing often begins with letting go.
Any message for our readers
Allow God to guide you through your healing process. Embracing this journey may not be easy, but it’s undeniably vital for personal growth and well-being.
