We had the pleasure of interviewing Kona Chise, the creator of the dark manga series GISEI which is currently running a Kickstarter campaign that has been hugely successful so far.
Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about GISEI.
Hi, we begin with inmate number 1141, sentenced to life in the Asbara prison. Here, she will face brutal obstacles for the crime that she has committed against the clan who adopted her. But her life might become even more vicious when she is recruited into an elite group within Asbara. Now she is part of the Ravens, assassins both deadly and unmerciful, and inmate 1141 becomes the best executor and the most vicious as well. But one day, she is given a request to eradicate evil beings of the Living Realm. Now, the inmate gets the opportunity to pursue the truth of her past and, perhaps, find atonement for her crimes. GISEI is a dark story about a violent character who is looking to unravel the reality of her world as she faces the vicious villain called The Magician, who is wiping out branches of the royal Nami Clan.
What distinguishes your manga, in your opinion?
I think it manages to balance being funny and action-packed but also very dark. It can’t all be solved by the power of friendship. This is something that I am sure will be a treat for the readers.
That sounds great! Will readers get a complete experience, even though you are only launching GISEI Vol. 1 at the moment?
Volume 1 offers a complete storyline with over 200 pages. While volume 2 is also coming soon and is sure to continue the story in an exciting way. Volume 1 also includes bonus comics from the creative team behind everything GISEI.
What are your goals for the campaign?
I set my basic goal at $5500, however, my stretch goal of $10000 has almost been met! We have surpassed $9000, an amazing result for my first Kickstarter campaign. The funds are going to be used to print, market, and distribute Volume 1, while I finish working on GISEI: Volume 2. They will also help me hire assistants and focus on the creative work. Currently, Vol. 1 is in the process of lettering, and then it will hit the presses to get shipped.
What’s the long-term plan for the GISEI series?
I hope to get GISEI adapted into an anime with D’ART Shtajio Studios, as I adore their work! This is an American-run studio in Japan, and they do some amazing animation! That’s still a long way off, though. In the shorter term, I hope to see people becoming fans of the work and forming communities around this manga. I also hope that it honors the mangakas who served as my inspiration.
