We had the pleasure of interviewing Vivian Cooper, a.k.a. S. Coop. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi Vivian, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about yourself.
Hi, I have been doing music for a very long time but took a pause for several years. The friends and systems that were in place slowly moved away, and so did my interest. However, after reuniting with some friends, I felt I needed to continue to pursue my dream, and that is when I started my label UpKing Music to feature myself as the artist.
This was during the time of the pandemic, and my first official release was called CoverUp and was basically about wearing a mask to protect oneself.
Please tell us more about your music projects.
Most of my songs so far have been about experience & social issues from my view, but feel-good party songs are on the menu. As an independent and upcoming artist, I have been releasing singles instead of an album on my label since 2021 and have completed works that are just waiting for the right moment to release. I also have songs that are just waiting for production, so from this year and coming, you can expect much more from S. Coop.
My latest release, Head A Hurt is due for release on 05/12/23 on all platforms. It is about the economy and basically describing how the value of assets yesterday has vastly been depreciated today with the official video to be released later.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I consider my best asset to be my writing skills. However, I do dabble in producing. Once I have an idea for a song, I try to create a beat as a guide that I can use to continue the idea of the song, and sometimes it is the beat that I create that brings forth the writing ideas.
Me being from Jamaica, my genre of music is Reggae Dancehall, and my biggest goal right now is to reach that audience even though I am now living in America. Since this genre is Jamaican-born, not producing in Jamaica creates a challenge that I am willing to take on, and I do hope to bring my music production directly to Jamaica.
