We had the pleasure of interviewing Phunc Milla, an Independent Hip-Hop Artist that does not follow the norm. Phunc tends to drive in his own lane creating music with his unorthodox style of Funk Rap. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about your journey.
Hi, I have been creating music as a solo artist for about ten years. The journey has been incredible, with all the ups and downs, which at one point had me wanting to give up on making music. In this industry, you hear a lot of “nos” or “this is not what we are looking for right now,” and then they end it with, “keep trying.” Just because we don’t like it today does not mean we will not like it tomorrow. I have heard that so much that once, I felt like no one would ever say yes. I did some soul-searching, and I switched up my style and the name that I went by. I had to reinvent myself and the artist that I want people to know and become to love.
What inspires your music projects?
My music is a mixture of several genres and eras. Growing up, I listened to a lot of funk like The Parliament, O’Jays, and Marvin Gaye, to name a few. My favorite decade when it comes to Hip-Hop is the 90s. I also like Drum-N-Bass, Jazz, and EDM, so I infuse all of those when I create music. I love to see people having a good time when they are out. I also make music for people to be able to relate to when it comes to different emotions people feel. I am all about uplifting people and spreading positive energy with my music.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Learning the business has allowed me to get this far within the industry. When I meet people within the industry, I never approach them to listen to my music. I always ask them for advice and knowledge that will help me further my career in the music industry. Knowing the business side of things will help me have longevity in this industry. I have also learned that relationships are a big deal in any commerce industry or type of business. Build relationships. I am humble, and I never act like I know everything. I always have room to learn something new from someone who has been doing this longer than I have.
Any message for our readers.
Most important, the first thing you do when you wake up is to give thanks to the Heavenly Father above. The ability to accomplish your dreams when you wake up is a blessing. Next, I would say, never let anyone or yourself say, “you can not do something.” Your number one enemy is yourself, and once you say you can not do something, that is what your brain will be programmed to think when it comes to anything in life that you want to accomplish.
