Collaboration between a Korean composer and Ukrainian Musician
Indie folk singer-songwriter Ian Chung has released a new song, “Little Bird,” featuring the talented Ukrainian singer Alex Bilyak of the popular Ukrainian band MBreeze. This collaboration is symbolic as it brings together two musicians from different parts of the world with shared experiences of going through wars in their respective countries.
The decision to collaborate with Alex Bilyak was a natural one for Chung, who was deeply moved by the strength and courage of the Ukrainian people during their ongoing conflict. As a Korean artist who has experienced the remaining pain of war, Chung wanted to reach out to his Ukrainian counterparts through the universal language of music and create a message of hope and courage for people around the world who are tired of conflict.
“Little Bird” is a gentle and uplifting song that speaks to the soul. Chung’s musical style blends indie folk, acoustic, and neoclassical genres, while Bilyak’s vocal talent brings a hauntingly beautiful quality to the song. Together, they have created a unique sound that is both soothing and inspiring.
This collaboration between two musicians from South Korea and Ukraine is truly meaningful and carries a message of courage and hope to the world. Through their music, Chung and Bilyak hope to inspire people to find strength in difficult times and to see the beauty that can still be found in the world, even amidst turmoil.
Alex has shared his story of recording a song amidst the tension and turmoil of the ongoing war in Ukraine. One day in December 2022, Alex informed Ian that Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was attacked, leaving them without electricity, water, and heat. He was standing near a metro subway station to catch some internet to see Ian’s response.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Alex and Ian decided to move forward with recording the song. They worked tirelessly to overcome the difficulties caused by the ongoing war, including power outages and internet disruptions. Through their dedication and perseverance, they were able to create a song that would heal and soothe people’s tired minds.
Speaking about the experience, Alex and Ian said, “It was an incredibly challenging time, but music has the power to unite and heal. We knew that we had to keep going, even when everything around us seemed to be falling apart.”
We had the pleasure of having a chat with the Musician. Here is what he shared about Remastered Release of Little Bird:
I originally wrote and released this song in the winter of 2022 as my first-ever composition with lyrics. Gratefully, it resonated with many indie folk enthusiasts. Collaborating with Alex Bilyak, lead vocalist of the popular Ukrainian band ‘MBreeze,’ we crafted the original version. I also unveiled an alternative version featuring the ukulele, creating a mysterious and nostalgic atmosphere inspired by Sufjan Stevens’ “Mystery of Love.”
When I first released “Little Bird,” I was transitioning from instrumental music to songwriting, unaware of the nuances of “mixing and mastering.” With subsequent musical endeavors, I felt a twinge of regret, prompting me to remaster the song. This album now includes two remastered versions, allowing me to revisit and refine the essence of “Little Bird.”
