Key Types of Trauma Therapy Methods

When you are experiencing trauma, one of the first things that you need to do is find a good therapy method that is going to work well for you. There are actually a few types of therapy that can be successful to this and it will often depend on what works for you and even the type of trauma that you have experienced.

Recognizing that there are several types of therapy for you to choose from can sometimes make it seem like a bigger challenge to get the help that you need. Picking one can seem overwhelming. But some of the key types of trauma therapy that you should try out to help you work through some of the trauma of the past and feel better includes:

Trauma Therapy

One of the first types of therapy that we are going to look at is psychotherapy. This is also known as talk therapy. When a patient chooses to go for this option to work through their trauma, they get a chance to speak with a professional about their trauma and then work through some of the healing process as well.

The doctor is going to work with the patient to help them talk through some of the problems that they experience each day. This will require that the doctor and the patient form a bond of trust together, allowing them to open up and share their thoughts together. Overall, the doctor will help the patient find the right way to get through the trauma through these talks.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

You won’t be long in the world of psychology before you hear about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. This one is a bit different from the others in that it will help the patient to work on changing their behaviors in order to get through the trauma and heal better than before.

Through CBT, the doctor is going to help a patient identify the attitudes and behaviors that are reflecting negatively on their lives. Patients can then work to replace some of these negative attitudes with ones that are more positive. Patients can then take the new skills that they learn in therapy and add them to their daily lives as well.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

This one is going to be pretty similar to what we see with CBT, but it is going to focus more on learning new, positive ways of addressing trauma compared to what they have done in the past. When they focus on a more positive way to handle life, it is much easier to put the trauma to rest.

It is possible that the medical professional will work with both of these to provide you with some of the relief that you need from the trauma in your life.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Trauma Therapy

Like other forms of trauma therapy, you can also work with the dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, to help when it is time to regulate your emotions. This form of therapy has been really effective when it comes to trauma patients who are also dealing with the problems of suicidal thoughts. If this is a problem for you, then it is best to work with DBT to help.

DBT is also going to be effective if you are struggling with a number of mental health disorders, including PTSD to name a few. It can also instill new skills to help those who may have developed some unhealthy behaviors as a result of their trauma, helping them to make some changes that will enhance several areas of their lives at the same time.

Somatic Therapy

One of the methods that a lot of patients will respond well to is somatic therapy. This is a simple form of therapy that takes a different approach compared to some of the other choices. It allows you a chance to work on healing both the mind and the body, rather than just focusing on the mind.

The idea here is that many people who experience trauma will store it in their bodies as well. This can cause them to feel worn out and tired as well and they can never fully recover until they are able to release some of that tension and feel better as well. With somatic therapy, you can address both of these problems, which can really help you to feel better.

You need to find the right professional who is going to work with you to ensure that you can find the right way to use somatic therapy to make you feel better. This is a great therapy to start out with, though many patients will be drawn to it when they find that some of the traditional forms of therapy just are not helping them get over some of the trauma they feel.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing may be a mouthful, but it is going to be a good one to help out some patients who experienced trauma and do not have a good way to deal with it on their own yet. EMDR is going to help the patient to focus on their trauma while they are visually stimulated at the same time.

Physical sensations, feelings, and thoughts are going to be activated while the stimulation will help to reduce the emotion and some of the physiological reaction to the trauma as well. Negative thoughts that are associated back to the trauma can then be reprocessed, with the help of a professional, to beliefs that are more accepting and positive at the same time.
