Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing may be a mouthful, but it is going to be a good one to help out some patients who experienced trauma and do not have a good way to deal with it on their own yet. EMDR is going to help the patient to focus on their trauma while they are visually stimulated at the same time.
Physical sensations, feelings, and thoughts are going to be activated while the stimulation will help to reduce the emotion and some of the physiological reaction to the trauma as well. Negative thoughts that are associated back to the trauma can then be reprocessed, with the help of a professional, to beliefs that are more accepting and positive at the same time.
