Camino a Casa by Casa Pacifica believes that mental health matters and should be a priority now more than ever before.

Today, we have the pleasure of interacting with the team at Camino a Casa, a behavioral and mental health care service company in California.

Please tell us about what it is that you do.

Though Casa Pacifica has served children and youth in foster care and education systems since 1994, we opened our doors to clients with private insurance four years ago. Called Camino a Casa (the road home), this program offers Casa Pacifica’s clinical expertise and experience in treating children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral issues to the community at large.

Our 25-acre campus houses seven residential “units,” ten classrooms, a fully equipped music room, gymnasium, swimming pool, playfields, youth counseling rooms, training/conference space, a medical clinic, and administrative offices. Casa Pacifica’s beautiful rural setting is four miles from the Pacific Ocean and midway between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

Can you please tell us more about your journey?

We believe the best practice in working with youth and families emanates from a set of shared values and commitments found in a “Culture Compass” that is fully integrated throughout our organization. Because we want to be deliberate about our corporate culture, we issue an annual calendar that highlights one value/belief/expectation each week. We ask staff to spend a few minutes at the beginning of every staff meeting discussing and reflecting upon the “value of the week.” This organizational intervention reminds us daily that we are a part of a larger community dedicated to helping vulnerable children and their families. Along with our mission and purpose, our core values lead us to corporate practices that strive for excellence in all that we do.

Please tell us more about ‘Camino a Casa.’

We get many questions about how involved the immediate family can be in a child’s journey to wellness at Camino a Casa. The short answer is that we definitely encourage family participation. We offer parents and other family members several opportunities to be there and support their loved one.

Parents and guardians are expected to participate in family programming on Saturdays and weekly family therapy sessions. Family therapy is an important component of the Camino a Casa Program. It encourages the involvement of the parent/guardian(s) and the entire family in the youth’s treatment to support the transfer of skills essential when the youth transitions home. Youth (RTC and PHP levels of care) participate in family therapy a minimum of once per week and visit with their family on those days.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

We’ve long invested in our amazing staff. We feel we have one of the best teams in behavioral healthcare for adolescents and teens. We also offer the flexibility to treat kids in many different ways, from in-home behavioral services to full residential treatment programs; we have an option that fits your family’s needs. Additionally, we’ve really invested in our 25-acre campus in Camarillo, offering residential-style accommodations, classrooms, a fully-equipped music room, gym, swimming pool, playfields, and really just everything kids might need while they are getting the help they need.
