Exploring Nature and Numbers with Gillian Joseph’s ‘Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys’

A Tropical Adventure with Tyree

Children love stories that invite them to imagine, explore, and discover something new. Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys by Gillian Joseph delivers exactly that. This lively picture book takes young readers on a fun-filled journey through The Tropical Resort, where curiosity leads the way. With every turn of the page, children step into a colorful adventure that blends counting, colors, and nature in a way that feels exciting and fresh.

Tyree has heard whispers about green monkeys living at the resort. He’s determined to find them, and that determination sparks an adventure full of playful exploration. From sandy beaches to lush gardens, Tyree’s search becomes a game of discovery, inviting little readers to join him in counting animals, spotting plants, and noticing surprising details tucked into the scenery.

The playful adventure shines thanks to the extraordinary illustrations by Prabir Sakar, whose art breathes life into every page.

The Joy of Discovery

What makes this book shine is its ability to spark curiosity. Instead of simply telling children about numbers or colors, Gillian Joseph weaves these elements into Tyree’s tropical adventure. Readers aren’t passively learning; they’re actively counting along with Tyree, noticing shades of green in the environment, and wondering what he’ll uncover next.

The story becomes a gentle introduction to learning. Children between the ages of two and five can easily follow along, while older siblings or adults will enjoy reading it aloud. The rhythm of the text encourages participation, turning reading time into an interactive experience. By the time Tyree reaches the truth about the “not-so-green” monkeys, kids will have explored more than just a story. They’ll have counted creatures, recognized colors, and developed a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

Another layer of joy comes from the surprises scattered throughout the pages. Tyree doesn’t just find animals. He also stumbles across colorful plants, hidden corners, and little details that keep readers engaged. Each page feels like a new discovery, mirroring the excitement of real-life adventures.

A Book That Grows With Children

One of the strengths of Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys lies in its versatility. It works beautifully as a bedtime story, a classroom read-aloud, or a fun library pick. Parents will love how it combines storytelling with subtle lessons in counting and colors. Teachers and librarians will appreciate how it can be used to spark discussions about nature, curiosity, and exploration.

The vibrant illustrations add another dimension. Children often connect most strongly with visuals, and the tropical setting bursts with energy. Bright beaches, leafy gardens, and playful animals bring the story to life. Even before a child can read independently, the illustrations invite them to point, count, and imagine what’s happening on the page.

This isn’t a book children will outgrow quickly. While toddlers may delight in the rhythm and bright artwork, preschoolers will engage more deeply with the counting and storytelling. The adventure grows with the child, which makes it a lasting addition to any collection.

We had the privilege of interviewing Gillian Joseph. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Gillian, it’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hello, I’m a mom, a mom-in-chief. That’s the title I’m most proud of—and the only one I need. My journey to writing Tyree and the Not-So-Green Monkeys began in Barbados. I went looking for the island’s famous green monkeys—first at a tropical resort, then finally I found them at the Wildlife Reserve. That real-life adventure inspired me to turn the experience into a children’s picture book—an interactive story about counting, nature, and discovering how amazing our planet really is.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

I believe stories are powerful. My strategy for success? Telling a true story that children can connect with.

Any message for our readers?
