In the realm of psychological thrillers, few debut novels stir as much anticipation and deliver such a profound impact as Trey Claybrooke’s “Be True To Yourself“. Set against the backdrop of 1993 Charlotte, North Carolina, the story explores the thin lines between reality and illusion through the eyes of Detective Donovan Harris. This article delves into the depths of Claybrooke’s novel, unveiling a tale that challenges perceptions and grips readers with its dark narrative.
Detective Donovan Harris: A Portrait of Complexity
Detective Donovan Harris is not your typical protagonist. Born and raised as an only child in rural South Carolina, his childhood was marked by the arrival of foster and adoptive siblings, shaping his values and forging a man with a deep-seated respect for justice and diversity. These qualities define him as he faces a perplexing murder case that threatens to unravel his reality.
The novel opens with Harris called to a routine crime scene, only to discover that the victim’s identity and the circumstances of their death are anything but ordinary. Each new victim reveals a chilling message from an enigmatic killer, who uses the past as a weapon and time as his playground. It’s a game of cat and mouse where the stakes are life and death, and the clues are buried deep in the folds of time.
The Fracturing Reality of Donovan Harris
As the body count rises, so does the strain on Harris’s grip on reality. The world around him begins to splinter, mimicking the fragile psyche of a man on the brink. Claybrooke masterfully portrays this disintegration, pulling the reader into a vortex of uncertainty. Harris’s encounters with Elise, a spectral voice from his past, serve as his only guide through the labyrinth that his life becomes.
The tension escalates as Harris toggles between the love for his wife, Jessie, and the haunting game set by the killer. Claybrooke uses this personal conflict to deepen the narrative, exploring themes of loyalty, truth, and the psychological impact of unresolved past traumas.
A Reflection on the Human Psyche
“Be True To Yourself“ goes beyond the surface of a traditional thriller to probe the complexities of the human psyche. Claybrooke challenges readers to question the very fabric of their perceptions of reality. The interplay between memory and present perception is a recurring motif, as Harris must decipher not only the killer’s messages but also the truth of his own past and identity.
The novel’s climax is a crescendo of revelations that force Harris to confront his demons—both real and imagined. In a final twist, the resolution of the mystery is as much about self-discovery as it is about solving the crimes.

We had the privilege of interviewing the Author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Hi, Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.
I am Trey Claybrooke. I am a native of North Carolina and reside in Charlotte. I have written short stories all my life. It was my son that convinced me to put some of my ideas together and create this book. He has been a big inspiration for me. My kids are grown, and I currently foster kids who need a stable home and a place to be safe. I hope to inspire them to strive to be what they want.
Please tell us about your book.
The concept of “Be True To Yourself“ has lingered in the recesses of my mind for years, and seeing it materialize into a book has been deeply gratifying. This tale delves into a murder investigation with an intriguing twist: the killer plucks victims from the past and deposits them in the present. Set against the backdrop of 1993 Charlotte, North Carolina, the story isn’t conventional time travel but rather a fragmentation of reality.
Our protagonist is Detective Donovan Harris, whose backstory reveals a childhood in rural South Carolina, as the only child of a farmer and his wife. To grow their family, his parents exposed Donovan to foster and adoptive siblings who instilled in him a respect for diversity and a strong sense of justice. These early experiences shape Donovan into a man unafraid to fight for what’s right, even at personal cost.
In 1993, Donovan, now a detective for the sheriff’s office, stumbles upon a seemingly routine crime scene, unaware that reality is already beginning to splinter. Each new victim sends a chilling message from the killer, placing Donovan squarely in the crosshairs of a madman’s game. As he unravels the clues, Donovan races against time to prevent further loss of life.
As the investigation unfolds, Donovan finds himself confronting unexpected shifts in his own life, forcing him to make difficult choices and muster the courage to protect those he holds dear. Readers are invited to join him on this suspenseful journey, brimming with unexpected twists and turns that culminate in a finale designed to leave them questioning reality itself.
Please tell us about your journey.
I am an engineer by trade. My job involves analysis and reports. It can be fulfilling but not creative. My son and I often will dissect a movie or book and talk about it for hours on end. He and I had considered collaborating on one of his ideas. He is the one who suggested I take my writings and run with them.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
My mind can feel like an ADHD whirlwind sometimes! One of the main reasons I hesitated to pursue publishing in the past was my struggle to focus and consolidate my thoughts. Thankfully, my son introduced me to a game-changing writing strategy: free writing. Essentially, I sit in front of the keyboard and let my thoughts flow freely, allowing whatever comes to mind to be recorded without judgment or constraint. Surprisingly, this method has enabled me to gather my scattered ideas and mold them into cohesive stories. Currently, I’m juggling five different projects. While working on one, inspiration for the others often strikes, leading to a dynamic and ever-evolving creative process.
