An Emotional Journey of Love and Resilience
“Never, Again.” by Laura Torres is an evocative and deeply emotional story that explores love, loss, and the power of healing. The novel follows Paula, a young Mexican woman, who leaves her home behind to study medicine in Canada. Amid the cold, distant landscape, Paula faces not only the challenges of being far from her family but also a personal battle with epilepsy—an invisible condition that she struggles with in silence. The story intertwines Paula’s journey with that of Melvin, a French man with a mysterious charm, as their fates converge in a tale that transcends cultural divides.
The book captures the silence and unspoken emotions that can weigh heavily on the human spirit. While it touches on the often-overlooked topic of epilepsy, it is also a profound exploration of mental health, resilience, and what it means to heal when the world around you feels foreign and cold. Laura Torres uses her own experiences and emotions to bring this heartfelt story to life, allowing readers to connect deeply with Paula’s struggles and triumphs.
A Journey of Self-Discovery and Love
At the heart of “Never, Again.” is Paula’s quest for both personal and professional fulfillment. Winning a scholarship to study medicine in Canada should be a dream come true. But for Paula, the reality of life in a new country is much harsher than she anticipated. The isolation she feels is compounded by the coldness of the city and the ever-present anxiety of living with epilepsy. The seizures she experiences are frequent, but they come in the quiet moments when no one is looking, making her feel more alone than ever.
Through Paula’s character, Torres explores the inner turmoil that many face when grappling with mental health. Paula’s condition is not something she talks about openly; it is a quiet, constant presence in her life. This silence—the fear of being judged or misunderstood—is something many people can relate to. Paula’s journey is one of finding the strength to confront her own vulnerabilities and the courage to trust someone with her deepest fears.
Amidst all this, Paula finds herself falling for Melvin, a French man with his own set of emotional scars. Their love story is not without its challenges. Both are wounded in different ways, and their connection is filled with unspoken desires, fears, and uncertainties. But it is through their relationship that Paula begins to understand that healing does not come from avoiding pain but from embracing it and finding strength in vulnerability.
Mental Health and the Struggle for Normalcy
“Never, Again.” also sheds light on the quiet struggles of mental health. Torres doesn’t tackle the issue in a clinical or overly dramatic way. Instead, she shows the small, everyday struggles that people with mental health challenges face. Paula’s experience with epilepsy is a metaphor for the broader experience of living with an invisible illness or mental health condition. The condition is there, but it’s often unseen by the world around her. Paula has to navigate a world that doesn’t understand her struggles, just as many people with mental health conditions do.
The narrative takes readers through the highs and lows of Paula’s life—her accomplishments, her setbacks, and her constant fight to hold onto the pieces of herself that are left after each episode. Through Paula’s experiences, Torres creates a story that is not just about epilepsy, but about the emotional toll of mental illness and the strength it takes to keep going despite it.
The book’s portrayal of Paula’s vulnerability, coupled with her immense resilience, highlights how mental health challenges are often hidden beneath the surface. The story captures the essence of what it’s like to feel isolated, misunderstood, and yet, still yearn for connection and love.

A Personal Story of Healing and Hope
For Laura Torres, “Never, Again.” is more than just a work of fiction—it is a reflection of her own life. Through Paula, Torres shares her personal experiences with love, silence, and the emotional impact of living with a chronic condition. The novel was written during a period of deep self-reflection, and Torres hopes that by sharing Paula’s story, others will feel less alone in their own struggles.
Writing this story allowed Torres to process her own emotions and experiences, and it’s evident that the novel is deeply personal. She blends her background as a nurse and medical student with her passion for writing, creating a narrative that is both medically informed and emotionally rich. “Never, Again.” is a tribute to the strength of the human spirit and a reminder that healing is possible, even when the road to recovery is long and uncertain.
Torres’ dedication to both medicine and storytelling comes through in every page of this book. As she continues her journey in the medical field, she is building a literary legacy that inspires readers to confront their own struggles with courage and grace. We had the privilege of interviewing Laura Torres. Here are excerpts from the interview.
Hi Laura, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.
Hello! I’m a nurse, a full-time writer, and currently a medical student. I’ve lived and studied in Canada, and I’m incredibly passionate about mental health, storytelling, and creating art that gives voice to the invisible battles many of us fight every day. I write both fiction and creative nonfiction, and my goal is always the same: to make people feel seen.
Please tell us about your book.
My debut novel is titled Never, Again. It’s the story of Paula, a young Mexican woman who wins a scholarship to study medicine in Canada. It’s about her first time away from home, falling in love, and living with epilepsy and mental health struggles in silence. The book explores how love can lift us up but also how it can tear us apart, especially when it happens in a world that’s already overwhelming. It’s written from the heart and filled with raw emotion, vulnerability, and poetic reflections on trauma, love, and resilience.
Please share your journey with our readers.
My journey as a writer started with survival. I wrote when I had no one to talk to, when I needed to understand myself, and when I wanted to preserve moments I didn’t want to forget. I worked in shelters, studied healthcare in Canada while raising my daughter, and continued writing through the chaos. Eventually, I realized that my stories—especially the ones that talk about pain, mental health, and the immigrant experience—needed to be shared, not hidden. Never, Again. was born from that place of truth.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Consistency, vulnerability, and community. I wrote every single day, even when I didn’t feel like it. I also stopped trying to write what I thought people wanted to hear, and started writing what I actually felt. I didn’t wait to be perfect, and I learned to ask for help. Connecting with other writers, editors, and readers gave me strength and motivation. I also embraced self-publishing through Amazon KDP to share my work without waiting for permission from the traditional world.
Any message for our readers?
If you’re carrying a story inside you, write it. Even if your voice shakes, even if you think no one will care. Someone out there needs to read exactly what you have to say. Don’t shrink to fit into someone else’s version of success.
Thank you so much, Laura, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
