In the heartfelt novel “To Play for Love” by Lorelei Henderson, readers are invited into a captivating tale of dreams, love, and the crossroads that define our lives. Through the eyes of Cassandra Chaletaine, a determined actress grappling with the complexities of her identity and career in Hollywood, Henderson weaves a story rich in emotion, resilience, and the pursuit of happiness.

A Tale of Two Dreams

Cassandra Chaletaine’s journey back to her roots in Boston opens more than just a door to her past; it unveils a new chapter of possibilities, reigniting old friendships and stirring long-suppressed feelings. Reconnecting with Michael Kiley, her childhood friend, and secret admirer, Cassandra finds herself at a pivotal crossroads. Michael, once a hopeful writer in Hollywood, has since dedicated his life to enriching his community, embodying the hometown love that Cassandra has long been missing in her life.

Their shared dreams and bi-racial heritage create a bond that is as profound as it is complicated. As their friendship blossoms into something deeper, Cassandra must confront the harsh realities of her career in Hollywood, where opportunities are as fleeting as they are fiercely sought after. “To Play for Love” masterfully explores the tension between pursuing a lifelong dream and the allure of a love that promises a different kind of fulfillment.

Between Hollywood Glamour and Hometown Heart

Lorelei Henderson’s novel is not just a romance; it’s an exploration of identity, belonging, and the sacrifices we make in pursuit of our dreams. Cassandra’s struggle to navigate her aspirations in the face of Hollywood’s daunting landscape is a reflection of the broader challenges faced by those who dare to dream big. The novel’s homage to Nelsan Ellis, Henderson’s late cousin, and a testament to perseverance in an industry that often overlooks talent for trivial reasons adds a layer of depth and authenticity to the narrative.

In Michael, readers find a character who embodies the beauty of giving back, illustrating that success need not be measured by fame or fortune but by the impact one makes on the lives of others. Their love story, set against the backdrop of Cassandra’s tumultuous career journey, offers a poignant reminder of the power of love to anchor us when the world seems intent on pulling us away from our roots.

Excerpt from the Book

Cassandra continued up the walk toward the double-glass entrance doors when she was suddenly bumped from behind. When she turned, a stack of wooden dining chairs were being held aloft by strong arms. Through the chair’s slats, she caught a glimpse of bright gray eyes in a solidly handsome brown face partially covered in a neatly trimmed beard.
They stared at each other through the slats for brief, heart-pounding seconds with a sudden, irretrievable fore knowledge of the past and the present entwining like lovers.
“Sorry,” a deep, rum-colored voice said from the stack. “I wasn’t paying enough attention to where I was going.”
He side-stepped right at the same time Cassandra did, causing them to bump again before he pulled off a deft twist, turning the chairs from between them out of harm’s way as he circled around her. He took a few steps, stopped a beat before moving off, and disappearing inside.
She stared after him. For a moment, she thought she’d recognized him. It was the voice she knew it yet couldn’t place it. Then again, it could just be her active imagination. “What’s wrong, Cass?” Her sister had come up beside her.
“I thought I recognized someone, but maybe not.”
