Award Winning Psychotherapist Charles McCormack’s Book ‘Healing of a Psychotherapist’: A Deep Dive into Emotional Resurgence

A Tale of Transformation

At its core, “Healing of a Psychotherapist is a narrative about transformation. McCormack invites readers into his early life, which was filled with disruptions and dislocations, from an authoritarian father in Alabama to an unwelcoming boarding school in France. Despite these challenges, or perhaps because of them, he uncovers his true calling—psychotherapy. McCormack’s account is a candid exploration of the trials that shaped him, not only as a professional but as a person.

This memoir stands out for its raw honesty and vulnerability. McCormack does not shy away from discussing his darkest moments and personal failings. He details his turbulent journey through academia, his impulsive travels, and his eventual epiphany that psychotherapy was not merely a profession but a calling to understand and heal not just others but himself.

Insights Beyond the Therapy Room

What makes McCormack’s memoir unique is how it extends beyond personal narrative to connect with universal themes of human struggle, resilience, and the search for meaning. He skillfully uses his life’s story to illuminate broader psychological truths. His reflections are interspersed with therapeutic insights that offer readers not only a look into a therapist’s mind but also a mirror reflecting their own thoughts and worries.

The book’s structure cleverly mirrors the therapeutic process—introspective, challenging, and ultimately enlightening. Through episodes from McCormack’s life, readers encounter profound wisdom on the nature of change, the power of self-awareness, and the courage required to embrace one’s true self. His writing is both accessible and deeply moving, making complex psychological concepts understandable and relevant to a lay audience.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Charles McCormack. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share your journey with our readers.

Hi, I am a psychotherapist who holds master’s degrees in both Clinical Social Work and Psychology. “Healing of a Psychotherapist is the story of my journey from an upbringing marked by frequent uprooting and the intermittent abusiveness of my father to exile to a boarding school in France at age 11. Subsequently, I failed a year in high school and was expelled from college. Yet, despite my delinquent acting out, I was always looking for something but could not articulate what that something was. After finally graduating from college, I quit my short business career to set out on a camping trip with no destination in mind. I was looking for that something. Events during this trip to Mexico and beyond led me to realize that what I needed wasn’t a job but a calling, and that calling was to become a psychotherapist. To my delight, I discovered that there are different kinds of intelligence, and I found mine in psychology. Starting as a volunteer at a psychiatric hospital, I evolved into an award-winning psychotherapist: Clinical Social Worker of the Year in Maryland and was awarded the 2023 Emeritus Award for a lifetime of contributions to the social work profession. I published professionally and was invited to join the faculty of the Washington School of Psychiatry. I spoke nationally and in Canada on the treatment of difficult to treat couples and individuals. Yet, despite these achievements, I wasn’t happy. My childhood had implanted within me a dark ampule that I could not shake. This was so evident that my mother, on her death bed, expressed her dying wish, not once but twice, “Charlie, have a good life. Charlie, have a good life. In that I loved my mother deeply, I took her dying wish to heart and set out to understand what was holding me back. The seven years of writing of “Healing of a Psychotherapist became a journey unto itself, leading me to realize what had been constraining me like the shells of a Russian Nesting Doll and eventually to a state of relative fulfillment today.

What was the key to your success?

Intense curiosity about myself and others, a willingness to hold myself and no one else responsible for my happiness, and stubborn persistence. While writing, I came to realize that although my journey was unique to me, the problem was not, and that the lessons I had fought so hard to learn would be helpful to others as well. Indeed, this is my deepest wish, for in helping others, I could not imagine having a more worthwhile life. God Bless.

Thank you so much for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
