Life often presents unexpected crossroads, and for those entering their forties while grappling with the aftermath of divorce, the journey can feel especially daunting. Yet, there is hope and opportunity in these transitions. T.L. Nguyen-Arkinstall’s latest book, Self-Reckoning: Embracing the Journey Beyond Forty and Divorce, delivers a compassionate guide for navigating the turbulent waters of midlife and starting over. Drawing upon her personal experiences, as well as her professional background as a Registered Professional Counselor, the author provides an honest roadmap for self-discovery, healing, and rediscovering one’s worth. With warmth and sincerity, her writing invites readers to examine their own stories and to bravely write the next chapter of their lives.
Facing Midlife with Courage and Openness
Stepping into midlife can be an exciting yet unsettling milestone. Many find themselves questioning old identities, facing physical and emotional changes, and wondering if it’s too late to chase new dreams. For those who have experienced divorce, these concerns are even more pronounced. In Self-Reckoning, T.L. Nguyen-Arkinstall acknowledges the complex emotions that arise during this period—feelings of loss, uncertainty, and even a sense of invisibility that can emerge after leaving a long-term partnership. She encourages readers to recognize that such emotional discomfort often signals the opportunity for profound transformation.
By candidly sharing her own story, the author invites readers to explore the deeper layers of their emotional health. She outlines how unhealed wounds from childhood can quietly shape one’s self-worth, choices, and relationships. In offering practical insights to address these wounds, Self-Reckoning becomes more than just another memoir; it’s a roadmap for anyone longing to move forward with newfound clarity.
A Roadmap to Healing and Rediscovery
In many ways, Self-Reckoning reads like a gentle conversation with a trusted friend. Rather than overwhelming the reader with dense theories, T.L. Nguyen-Arkinstall weaves in approachable strategies for rebuilding after loss. She places a strong emphasis on confronting negative beliefs and redefining what it means to feel worthy, particularly when established roles and self-images have crumbled.
Central to her approach is the concept of radical acceptance—embracing every facet of one’s past without judgment, and recognizing that healing begins when individuals meet themselves with compassion. The book provides reflective questions that guide readers toward identifying patterns, evaluating behaviors, and discovering ways to heal the wounds that may still linger. These prompts serve as touchstones for introspection, ensuring that the journey of self-discovery remains both practical and uplifting.

Moreover, the author delves into how relationships change in midlife, whether they involve parents, children, or new romantic connections. By allowing readers a glimpse into her own life, she underscores that vulnerability and authenticity can become powerful tools for growth. This intimate perspective encourages others to be unafraid of stepping into the unknown, whether that entails forging new friendships, pursuing a fresh career path, or redefining existing family dynamics.
Navigating the Crossroads of Divorce and Renewal
Divorce is rarely a straightforward process; it often unearths lingering regrets and unresolved pain. T.L. Nguyen-Arkinstall addresses these experiences head-on, offering a compassionate perspective on how to move from heartbreak to hope. She reminds readers that even in moments of deep sorrow, there is an underlying resilience that surfaces when one dares to confront fear and grief. Instead of dwelling on failures, she suggests viewing divorce as a catalyst for growth and reinvention.
This mindset shift opens space for readers to imagine a different kind of future. When self-worth is shaken by the dissolution of a relationship, reclaiming one’s identity becomes a vital step forward. Self-Reckoning provides tangible exercises that encourage readers to shed old habits, set healthy boundaries, and nurture meaningful connections. By doing so, individuals can reshape their lives with a stronger sense of purpose and self-awareness, making room for new dreams and fresh beginnings.

We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please introduce yourself and tell us what you do.
My name is Linh Nguyen, and my pen name is T.L. Nguyen-Arkinstall. I’m a Registered Professional Counselor (RPC) and run a private practice called The Wise Heart. My specialty is in self-worth and leadership coaching. I primarily work with families and women to develop healthier interpersonal and intrapersonal language. I have six years of experience in the therapeutic field, as well as over 20 years of business management experience.
Please tell us about your Book.
My book, Self-Reckoning: Embracing the Journey Beyond Forty and Divorce, chronicles my experiences of self-discovery over the past six years. It offers insights into how one can meet themselves at the midlife mark with compassion, forgiveness, and radical acceptance. The aim of the book is to provoke readers to assess their own wounds and offer them perspectives on how to heal.
Please tell us about your journey.
I’ve always wanted to write a book but never really knew what I would write about. Then, after I had left my marriage, it became clear that there was much to share with my clients and followers on social media. The worries and fears I carried up until just before I turned 40 years old suddenly didn’t feel so big. Speaking with other people my age made me realize that we were all going through such similar things, they were just packaged differently. My nature is to want to help people, and I enjoy storytelling. So, I gathered all of my experiences, shared them on social media posts, and eventually wrote a book elaborating on those posts. The more I shared, the clearer it became to me that it was always me who was standing in the way of my healing. Despite who was responsible for triggering the anger, fear, sadness, or disappointment in me, it was always my responsibility to unburden myself of the suffering. Learning that changed the entire course of my life and my work.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Self-reflection, personal accountability, applying purpose to the suffering, and becoming the person that my wounded parts needed all along. Asking myself, “What part did I/do I play in my own suffering?” The questions I asked myself to progress towards healing and access more self-love are included at the end of my book.
Any message for our readers
Healing is such a unique experience for everyone. No matter what junction you find yourself in at this point in life, the learning never stops being invaluable. At least, that’s how I see it. And if you’re willing to seek perspective on how to meet yourself, maybe this book can offer a roadmap or blueprint.
Thank you so much, Linh Nguyen, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
