In Can We Get a Giraffe?, Dr. Christian Kueng Gives Families a Delightful Way to Talk About Pets

A child’s dream pet can make perfect sense to the child and leave a parent searching for words. In Can We Get a Giraffe?, Dr. Christian Kueng begins with a little girl’s wonderfully ambitious request and follows the conversation it starts with her dad.

One Very Tall Request

The little girl knows what she wants: a giraffe. Her choice catches Dad by surprise, and it is easy to see why. A giraffe needs far more room than their home can offer. Dad explains the practical problem, while his daughter keeps the discussion going. Her enthusiasm gives the story its playful energy.

Children often become fascinated by animals long before they understand what caring for one involves. A giraffe has an unforgettable shape, a long neck, and the sort of presence that can fill a child’s imagination. For the girl in Christian’s story, wanting one is a serious wish. Dad treats that wish as something worth discussing, even as he helps her think about what it would mean at home.

That exchange gives families an easy way into the book. Young readers can enjoy the boldness of the request and wonder how they would answer Dad’s questions. Adults will recognize the familiar moment when a child’s excitement meets the limits of space, time, and everyday care.

The Animal Ideas Keep Coming

As the conversation continues, the girl considers a penguin, a sloth, and a sea turtle. Each suggestion brings a new animal into the family’s discussion. The variety makes the exchange fun to follow, and it may prompt children to name a few dream pets of their own.

The choices also invite simple questions. Where would a penguin be comfortable? What would a sloth need? Could a sea turtle live happily in a family home? Parents and children can talk through the answers together, using the girl’s suggestions as a starting point. The story leaves room for curiosity to lead that conversation.

Dad eventually raises a larger concern: giraffes are endangered. His reminder gives the girl another way to think about the animal she admires. Loving a giraffe can include learning about its life and why its future matters. Dad also has an idea of his own, giving readers a reason to stay with the story and discover where their discussion leads.

Can We Get a Giraffe? draws much of its appeal from that back and forth. The girl keeps asking, Dad keeps listening, and each new suggestion moves their conversation along. It is a recognizable family scene with a delightfully unusual animal at its center.

For children who have asked for a pet, the situation will feel familiar. Many have pictured bringing home an animal they saw at a zoo, in a book, or on a screen. The girl’s giraffe gives those wishes a memorable shape. Her conversation with Dad can help young readers begin to consider the needs of the animals they love.
