The Unlikely Journey of Emanrasu
In “The Heater and the Hack: The Chronicles of the Dance – RCotD -:- Tome I,” Leslie R. Waggoner III introduces readers to a world steeped in mystery and legacy. Emanrasu is a protagonist who doesn’t seek fame or adventure; instead, he’s driven by the simple desire to return his father’s old sword and shield—items he sees as burdens—to a grandfather he has never known. But fate has other plans. Alongside Rezua, his towering friend, Emanrasu finds himself swept up in a journey where the past won’t stay buried, and shadows whisper forgotten truths.
What begins as an errand spirals into a deeper mystery. The Heater and the Hack aren’t ordinary heirlooms; they’re artifacts steeped in meaning and power. As the journey unfolds, readers travel through vividly portrayed landscapes, each harboring secrets that push Emanrasu further into a destiny he’s reluctant to embrace. This isn’t a straightforward hero’s tale—it’s a nuanced exploration of how history, legend, and choice intersect.
Layers of Myth and Mystery
Waggoner doesn’t hand answers out freely—he invites the curious reader to piece them together. The story echoes the classic struggles found in Moorcock, Leiber, and McCaffrey, while also channeling Zelazny’s shifting realities and existential games of fate. It’s a richly woven tapestry that rewards close attention, where every discovery leads to new mysteries, deeper truths, and questions of fate versus free will.
This isn’t simply a narrative about swords and ancient artifacts; it’s a story about connections. As friendships deepen and battles loom, Emanrasu learns that every step forward shifts his understanding of the past. Each character he meets—scholars holding silent burdens, enigmatic mentors—adds depth and complexity, nudging him toward an understanding of balance and chaos. Readers are drawn into the intricate worldbuilding that rivals Tolkien’s linguistic mastery, resonating with a timeless mythic quality reminiscent of Le Guin.

A Debut to Rival Legends
Critics have noted that Waggoner’s debut novel doesn’t shy away from complexity. They’ve compared its subtlety to Gene Wolfe, its mythic resonance to Ursula K. Le Guin, and its cosmic scope to Roger Zelazny. But beyond comparisons, “The Heater and the Hack” stands firm as an original work that deeply respects fantasy’s rich traditions while boldly carving its own unique path.
Waggoner’s storytelling style gracefully blends elements of philosophy, history, and symbolism. His prose feels effortless yet deliberate, guiding readers through a narrative that demands both attention and introspection. Each revelation prompts readers to reconsider what they’ve already read, creating an immersive experience that feels fresh, despite the genre’s well-explored territory.

The Author Behind the Myth
Leslie R. Waggoner III didn’t rush into writing. At 58, he transformed decades of thought and inspiration into his first novel, reflecting a life filled with meaningful detours. A U.S. Armed Forces veteran, Waggoner’s experiences abroad sparked his fascination with dualities—chaos and order, history and symbolism—that form the thematic core of “The Heater and the Hack.”
His deep admiration for literary giants like Zelazny, Donaldson, and Tolkien shines through clearly, yet he maintains a distinct, authentic voice. Waggoner writes not just to entertain, but also to invite readers to think deeply, question freely, and explore the gray areas between established truths. His work isn’t about providing easy answers but about creating an engaging, thought-provoking journey.
Ultimately, “The Heater and the Hack” promises more than escapism—it offers a profound exploration of how legacies shape lives, how myths shape reality, and how every choice, large or small, has lasting consequences. Readers who embark on this epic adventure will find themselves eager to unravel the next layer of mystery, eager to see where the road—and the next Tome—will take them.
We had the privilege of interviewing the author. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Thank you so much for joining us today! Please tell us about your story/journey.
The journey to writing was a long and winding road—at least for me. The stepping stones that led inexorably to this book, this series, and ultimately this writer were unexpected.
As an avid reader in my youth, Heinlein, Asimov, Tolkien, and Burroughs played huge roles in shaping my love for good stories. My father’s desire to connect with the past provided me with the inquisitive nature that passed through my military career and catapulted me into an unexpected attempt at creating something literary I could be proud of.
Due to my distaste and lack of appreciation for writing, composition, and English in general, my high school days were tainted with mediocre grades, brought about by the lack of true mentorship.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
My experiences led to the creation of my own coat of arms, which then inspired the story of Emanrasu and his Cadre and Kin.
I have been told more than once that I need to write for a broader audience, though I have a differing opinion. With my writing, I aim to create a multilayered experience—one that offers a foundation for exploring ideas and philosophies outside the norm. My intent is not only to provide food for thought but also to cultivate a more nuanced vocabulary. Ultimately, I strive to paint an immersive and intricate picture in the reader’s mind. My desire is to encourage you to read those writers who use a more complex vocabulary.
Any message for our readers
My goal is that you get as much enjoyment out of this novel—and ultimately the series—as I got from writing it. Though I never imagined myself writing in this manner, I can say for certain I will continue until such time as I am unable.
Thank you so much, Leslie, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
