‘Too Close To The Sun’ – The Stunning Single of Wouter van der Veen’s Mirror Mirage

Progressive Rock Returns: Wouter van der Veen’s New Venture, Mirror Mirage

After a notable hiatus from the progressive rock scene, Dutch guitarist and songwriter Wouter van der Veen returns, refreshed and creatively invigorated, introducing his compelling new project—Mirror Mirage. Renowned for his work with bands like Armed Cloud and Steelyard, van der Veen brings a seasoned touch to this exciting venture. Mirror Mirage is already generating buzz, especially with the launch of its debut single, “Too Close To The Sun,” and the imminent release of the EP “Missing Pieces,” scheduled for June 30, 2025.

The Man Behind the Music: Wouter van der Veen

Wouter van der Veen’s reputation precedes him, known for intricate guitar work and thoughtful songwriting that resonates with fans of classic and contemporary rock alike. Now, with Mirror Mirage, van der Veen steps into new territory—taking on vocal duties himself for the first time. “Too Close To The Sun,” the project’s introductory single, holds special significance for him. It encapsulates an emotional struggle familiar to many—the frustration of almost grasping a dream only to watch it slip away repeatedly. It’s personal, introspective, and perhaps the most accessible piece from the upcoming EP.

Mirror Mirage isn’t merely another rock band. It reflects van der Veen’s evolving artistic journey, merging his past experiences with fresh perspectives. Having been away from the progressive rock spotlight for a while, van der Veen reemerges confident and enthusiastic, armed with musical ideas he’s keen to share.

Classic Inspirations Meet Modern Expression

Mirror Mirage draws heavily from the legacies of legendary acts such as Rainbow, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Dio, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Fans of these iconic bands will recognize echoes of their powerful riffs, sweeping melodies, and complex arrangements. However, van der Veen doesn’t merely replicate past styles—he revitalizes them. The music feels simultaneously familiar and innovative, ensuring it resonates across generations of rock fans.

Expect the unexpected—Mirror Mirage promises a robust sonic experience marked by heavy guitar riffs, captivating vocal melodies, rhythmic drum grooves, and darkly atmospheric keyboards. Each element blends seamlessly, crafting songs that are rich in both technical prowess and emotional depth.

The Meaning Behind “Mirror Mirage”

The project’s intriguing name, Mirror Mirage, originates from a track by van der Veen’s former band, Armed Cloud. But beyond mere homage, it carries deeper symbolism. “Mirror Mirage” speaks to the human tendency to chase after illusions—hopes, dreams, and ambitions that might never materialize. This idea threads throughout the songs on the “Missing Pieces” EP, providing thematic coherence and emotional resonance.

Van der Veen explains it as a reflection on illusion, aspiration, and the blurry lines between reality and desire. Through Mirror Mirage, he explores these themes in relatable, heartfelt ways. Listeners will undoubtedly find echoes of their own experiences within these tracks, enhancing the EP’s universal appeal.

Debut Single and Upcoming EP Release

The debut single, “Too Close To The Sun,” is currently available across major platforms, including Spotify, SoundCloud, and YouTube. Fans are already praising its engaging blend of accessible melody and intricate musicianship, hinting at the compelling offerings the full EP will bring. Anticipation grows as the June 30 release date for “Missing Pieces” approaches.

For van der Veen, this release is a significant milestone—a chance to showcase his musical evolution and reconnect with the progressive rock community. Mirror Mirage stands as proof that his creative spark hasn’t diminished; rather, it’s blazing brighter than ever.

Listeners eager for a deep dive into dynamic arrangements, profound lyrical themes, and masterful guitar work will find plenty to love in Mirror Mirage’s debut. With “Too Close To The Sun” leading the way, “Missing Pieces” is set to deliver a memorable musical journey.

Wouter van der Veen’s return with Mirror Mirage isn’t just a comeback—it’s a powerful statement of artistic resilience and musical passion. Fans and newcomers alike have much to look forward to as the progressive rock genre welcomes back one of its uniquely talented contributors.

We had the privilege of interviewing Wouter van der Veen. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I am a guitar player and songwriter from the Netherlands. I recently launched my brand new progressive rock project, “Mirror Mirage“. The first single, “Too Close To The Sun,” is out now, and our debut EP, “Missing Pieces,” will be coming soon.

Please tell us about your song.

The first single: “Too Close To The Sun“. It’s a very personal song for me, and it’s actually the first time I did the vocals myself. It’s about trying to achieve something, but every time you get close, it slips away, and you’re back from where you started again. I think it’s the most accessible song of the EP.

Please share your journey with our readers.

I have been away from the progressive rock scene for quite some time. I used to play in the band Armed Cloud (progressive rock/metal), and I left there somewhere in 2018. After that, I did some different musical projects, like Steelyard (alternative rock), but I also played in a gypsy jazz band for some time. It was during the Corona period that I started writing and recording progressive rock music again. At first, it was not yet with the intention of starting something new again, but later, it did become just that. It was the first time I did the whole recording and mixing process myself, so it was a long and educational project for me. Progressive rock and metal is and remains a genre that is close to my heart and where I can express my musical inspiration the most. It is a versatile style, and writing songs in it comes naturally to me. This is why I had to start again at some point. For now, it is only a studio project, but certainly with the intention to come up with new music regularly.
