Meet the Remarkable Poet Behind ‘Broken Pipe, Broken Dreams’ — Charlene Chapman’s Story Will Move You

A Poetic Path Through Addiction and Recovery

Charlene Chapman’s poetry collection, Broken Pipe, Broken Dreams: Rising from the Ashes, is far more than a literary work—it’s a heartfelt exploration of personal transformation. Through raw emotion and relatable honesty, Chapman takes readers deep into the difficult realities of addiction and the resilient climb towards recovery. Her words resonate with authenticity, extending comfort and courage to those facing their own battles.

Unfiltered Glimpse into Addiction’s Realities

Broken Pipe, Broken Dreams doesn’t shy away from the harsh truths of addiction. Chapman uses poetry to capture not just the pain, but the entire spectrum of emotional upheaval that accompanies substance abuse. Her candid expressions reveal the loneliness, despair, and chaos that addiction can bring. Through poems written with vivid imagery, she communicates clearly how addiction can take hold—turning dreams into nightmares, severing connections, and fracturing hope.

Yet, even as Chapman describes these darker experiences, her intention remains clear: sharing openly is essential to healing. Readers sense an immediate connection with her honesty; she doesn’t gloss over the gritty details or minimize the emotional toll. This authenticity is exactly what makes the poetry so powerful. It lets readers know they’re not alone—that someone else has felt these depths and survived to share the tale.

We had the privilege of interviewing Charlene Chapman. Here are excerpts from the interview.

Hi Charlene, It’s great to have you with us today! Please share about yourself with our readers.

Hi, I’m a self-published author, and I also travel around speaking at Inpatient facilities about my story, as well as reading my poetry. My sole purpose in life is to help others by sharing my story.

Please tell us about your journey.

My journey has not been easy. Aside from being born along with my identical twin sister to a crack-addicted mother and abandoned at the hospital, I was severely abused by the person who raised us. I had very successful careers, but once I started drinking, I could never stop, which led to an addiction to drugs in my early 30s. I never thought in a million years that I would use drugs and be out on the dangerous streets in Newark, NJ.

What inspired you to write the book?

The last time I got clean, I went into rehab for 28 days. I finally hit a spiritual bottom, and my intuition was telling me I was going to die in the streets from drinking alcohol and using drugs. While at this facility. I had visions and dreams of this book and was inspired to write it. It tells my story from the beginning of my drug addiction. The book is a poetic journey through the darkness of addiction and the turbulent and dangerous road back to recovery and transformation.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Strength, resilience, and determination. Also, I keep myself around a positive environment and positive people. I always try to talk about issues before it becomes a problem in my life.

Any message for our readers?

Recovery is possible. I’ve often heard the phrase, “Once an addict, always an addict,” but that is not true. If you don’t address past trauma with therapy, it will always show up in adulthood.

Thank you so much, Charlene, for giving us your precious time! We wish you all the best for your journey ahead!
