If you’ve ever been captivated by tales of resilience and the indomitable human spirit, S. E. Dunn’s latest novel, The Secrets You Don’t Write in a Diary, is a must-read. Set against the harsh realities of 18th-century Jamaica, this gripping story weaves history, courage, and redemption into an unforgettable tapestry.
A Queen’s Journey from Captivity to Revolution
At the heart of the novel is Queen Zaria, an African monarch whose life takes a drastic turn when she’s torn from her kingdom and separated from her family. Thrust into the brutal world of slavery, Zaria refuses to let her spirit be broken. Instead, she emerges as a beacon of hope among the oppressed, uniting them in a daring bid for freedom.

Dunn masterfully portrays Zaria’s transformation from a queen stripped of her throne to a leader igniting a revolution. As she navigates the treacherous waters of betrayal and smuggling within the plantation, every choice she makes is fraught with danger. The suspense builds with each page, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as Zaria fights not just for liberation, but for a chance to reunite with the family she fears she’s lost forever.
S. E. Dunn: Weaving Heritage into Narrative
Behind this powerful story is author Sheryl “aka the 6ft tall Jamaican” S. E. Dunn, whose own roots deeply influence her writing. Born in Jamaica, Dunn brings a rich cultural heritage to her work, celebrating themes of resilience, family bonds, and the strength found within community.
A proud mother and grandmother, Dunn’s family plays a significant role in her life and inspirations. Her daughter Camille and son Ronnie carry on the family’s culinary passions in Georgia, while her youngest son Anthony exemplifies resilience, having overcome significant losses during the pandemic.
When she’s not crafting compelling narratives, Dunn enjoys the simple pleasures of life—decorating, spending time at the beach, and infusing warmth into her home. Her love for storytelling is evident as she continues to work on her next novel and a series of children’s books, with her imagination running at full throttle.
