This focus on the readers shows in the tight prose, exciting finales and cliffhangers, and short, digestible chapters that are perfect to be consumed one after the next. We had the pleasure of interviewing T.S. Maynard. Here are the excerpts from the interview.

Hi, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about yourself.

I’m the author of four books, but Nina Winter and the Age of Darkness is the first I’ve written alone. As a father of three girls (two are teenagers), I wanted to write something that they could enjoy, but this book isn’t just for teens. It’s a story for anyone rooting for people who have been kicked and then kicked again by life.

Please tell us more about your book, Nina Winter and the Age of Darkness.

The idea for the story came to me after a long week of work. I collapsed on my bed and knew that after a good night’s sleep, I’d feel better. What if that wasn’t the case? For whatever reason, I imagined living in the Dark Ages without a cozy house, AC, running water, or a fridge full of food. Plus, I’d be in constant fear of wild animals, invading armies, bandits, and thieves. Then I imagined what it would be like if you were the lowest of the low in that type of society. A character started to emerge, a young peasant girl, and in addition to the hardships she was born into, she also recently lost her father. Finally, I imagined something awful happening to her village, which forces her to flee to a mysterious castle with dark secrets. How could a person survive and overcome so much adversity? Nina Winter is a character I’ve enjoyed getting to know, so much so that I’m writing a second book about her. I hope readers enjoy her story as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it.

What inspires your writing?

The inspiration for my novels tends to come from unique “what if” scenarios, and the success of my stories, I believe, comes from the fact that I write with readers in mind. Are they going to find this interesting? Because of that, my writing style includes short chapters with cliffhangers and tight prose. As an indie author, I think that’s important because people have a lot of choices, and if they’re willing to take a chance with a story from someone they don’t know yet, I better make sure I entertain them.

Any message for our readers.

I hope that anyone reading my books will finish feeling a little better about the world than when they started. Of course, the journey will have some ups and many downs, but by the end, I want to put a smile on someone’s face.
