We had the pleasure of interviewing Sapphire, Author of Shades of Red: Confessions of a Wanna Be Church Girl. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi Sapphire, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about yourself.
Hi, I’m an entrepreneur and, most recently, an author. One day someone posted on FB, “Do you have a story?” I thought, sure! I have plenty of stories. I thought I’d be giving material for the publisher to write a book, but she turned my stories into the book.
Please tell us about your journey.
I’ve suffered from depression all of my life. It’s been a private journey. Growing up in a Christian community, no one understood. I’m not sure anyone even noticed. I was about 21 when my physician diagnosed and started treating me with antidepressants. That was a journey in itself. I honestly thought she didn’t know what she was talking about. I’m not depressed, I thought. However, I started to piece things together, and it started to make sense. My book, however, may not. It’s a peak into the thoughts and life of just one person dealing with one type of mental illness.
My faith and family have gotten me where I am today. Finally, much better. I hope that people, especially Christians, will better understand mental illness. We can not simply pray it away. We can not simply get up and take a nice shower and sip a cup of hot tea and carry on. It is an illness like any of the other physical illnesses. Treatment and doctor’s care are needed, and they may be needed for the duration of one’s life.

If you are not well, please seek help just as you would with high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. Like any other organ can not be well, it is with your brain.
