Author and Educator Gregory Wayne Walton II shares his journey of triumph over adversity & empowering kids through his books

We had the pleasure of interviewing Gregory Wayne Walton II, an Author, Educator, Life Coach, and Actor.

Gregory Walton is releasing his second book for kids, ‘Melanin Born Spelling Bee Kings.’ This follows the successful release of his first children’s book, ‘Melanin Born Kings: We are Capable of anything!’ meant to empower kids and create a strong educational tool. In addition to his literary journey, Walton is a successful educator, certified life coach, and actor who is putting his skills to good use by helping others.

Gregory Wayne Walton II was raised in East Side San Jose, California, in a community with many difficulties. He attended schools that mostly lacked resources, and, overall, his neighborhood was underserved. As a child and a youth, Walton dreamed of becoming a professional athlete, so he played baseball, basketball, and football, later on, followed by intercollegiate and amateur football. However, a series of injuries allowed him to discover and pursue a passion for reading, researching, and education.

Walton graduated magna cum laude from Foothill College with a degree in Sociology. This was followed by degrees from the California State University of Sacramento (a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology) and a Master’s in Criminal Justice from the University of Southern California. He was a first-generation college student who graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Walton is also a Certified Life Coach, working at a personal practice through Dyverse Empowerment LLC.

His passion for education is informed by his journey, but this has not always been easy. While working on his Bachelor’s, Walton experienced homelessness for several months, but this did not prevent him from becoming a leader in his academic environment or the President of the Sociology Club. He received Most Outstanding Graduating Senior and other honors during his academic path, and today he hopes to inspire others through his books, his work, and his public speaking. Through the educational opportunities, he hopes to offer to new generations.

In 2021, Gregory Walton published his first book for children, fulfilling a long-time dream. The book ‘Melanin Born Kings: We are Capable of anything!’ was a success and is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. 2022 will see the next release from Walton with the follow-up to this first inspirational and educational work. He will release ‘Melanin Born Spelling Bee Kings.’ This is a book designed to enhance the reading and spelling skills of a population that often faces additional barriers in acquiring these abilities: black boys.

Between 2022 and 2023, Gregory Walton plans to launch a non-profit to combat educational inequality and child poverty, hoping to offer more kids the opportunity to grow and develop and pursue scholarly interests, no matter their background or circumstances. He is currently working to become a legislator to make bigger changes on a national level, a journey that is sure to lead him to great things.
