Hi, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about yourself.
Hi, my name is Barry Teffera. I’m a molecular neuroscience researcher who wants to write children’s bedtime stories in order to inspire the next generation of scientists. My pen name is “Mr. Recess.”
Please tell us about your book, Amy Goes to Sing to the Coral Reef.
My book “Amy Goes to Sing to the Coral Reef” is a rhyming bedtime story that teaches kids about one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, the coral reef!
Please share with us more about your journey.
As a child, my mother would read me bedtime stories, which I still look back on with immense gratitude. My dad’s job focused on teaching salesmen about pharmaceuticals. Through the combination of these perspectives, I built an interest in teaching science through various avenues. During college, I would write for local magazines about scientific research on campus. This book is an extension of the skills I developed, showing how exciting and beautiful the world of science is.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
The most important strategy I’ve learned in my journey through life is to learn from failures. Both failing and learning are necessary for progress. If you just fail, you doom yourself to the depths of depression, where you become numb and lose drive. If you just learn from your past or from watching others, you become overwhelmed by the breadth of information you’re trying to process. You become comfortable with the illusion of progress, and this comfort leads you to stagnation, which resembles the loss of drive that’s born from mindlessly repeating the same failures over and over again. So, the most important strategy when trying anything is to learn from failures. They are inevitable and, when managed properly, will guide you to achieving your goals.
