Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Heather Whitty, a musician living in Portland, Oregon.
From childhood, Heather has had a serious interest and passion in music, having come from a lineage including iconic keyboard player George Whitty, and Jeff Whitty who wrote the Tony Award Winning book adaptation of Broadway’s Avenue Q. During and after high school Heather showed much promise in school choirs and musical theater, which is where her love for music truly began refining.
Please tell us something about yourself.
I have a dog named Marcy, she’s my best friend. She is my constant through all the crazy ups and downs that come with this lifestyle.
How did you get into what you do right now? Please tell us more about your journey.
Since I could talk, I’ve had a passion for singing… I remember being 3 years old and listening to Judy Garland and having to quietly get up to flip the tape… to give you an idea of how old I am. I’m 23.
Who are your role models?
Musically? Rufus Wainwright, Biggie. All music interests me, so I guess that’s not really a role model. But in a way, it is how I’ve defined my emotions growing up and felt represented, I guess…
What inspires you?
Not to sound macabre, but definitely pain. I guess difficult times and emotions are impossible for me to process without music.
Please tell us about your Story.
I make what comes naturally. Partly it hinges on what I’m going through at that time, but also my partner (in music) Nathan Sloan works really hard to help me get my feelings on paper.
What’s your most memorable experience?
Uhhh, I once went to Europe on a class trip? I remember odd things.
What’s your greatest fear?
Spiders.
Looking back, what’s one thing you wish you understood better before you ever got started?
Mental health…
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Staying healthy and taking care of myself and being open to anything. Collaborating is everything.
What keeps you going when things get tough?
My friends and family.
