Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Jahlemi. He was born a talented musician in Southern Cameroons and involved himself in choirs at the age of seven, and rapidly became a leader of each group. He grew from school competitions to reggae jam sessions with prominent artists like Chimi Butazi, a Cameroonian reggae performer, and Etub Eyang, a Rock and Roll musician.
He was greatly impacted by the Rwandan Genocide and the mass killing of innocent people across Africa in the 1980s, finding inspiration for his own music in problems within society. As a registered nurse, Jahlemi is adept at offering solutions and uses his music to heal and support people. Let’s hear more about his song and his journey…
Please introduce yourself and tell us about what it is that you do.
My name is Jahlemi; I am a reggae artist; I am also a Registered Nurse and currently an NP student. I have just released a song called Skin Color.
Please tell us about your New Song – Skin Color.
I have written a song about racial discrimination because I want the world to understand what it means to be black in America and also to understand that the children do not see color. For that reason, we need to live like them. In the song, I am asking everyone from every race to come together. As a black man in America, I have to be on guard every time I leave my house because I am afraid I could be hurt by a white person. I am judged not by the content of my character but by skin color. It needs to stop.
Can you please tell us more about your journey?
I am a black man living in the US. I came from Cameroon in 2002. I never felt different until I started living in the US. I have been maltreated and humiliated by some of my bosses, some of my teachers, and others because of my skin color.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Hard work has been my number one strength. I have learned how to pick myself up, dust myself, and keep going each time I fall down. I am also very good at learning from my mistakes and making sure that I don’t make the same mistakes again.
