Lil Wayne was born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. He dropped out of high school when he was 14 to focus on his music career. He has had several high-profile partners, like his ex-wife Toya Johnson, Nivea, and Lauren London.
Lil Wayne started his professional career when he was just 12 years old when he got signed by Birdman and joined Cash Money Records. He became the flagship artist for this company and stayed that way between 1998 and 2018, starting out as the youngest artist for the brand. He started performing along with B.G., then known as Lil Doogie, and recorded and released his first album in 1995 under the name Baby D. Wayne was only present on three tracks. After that, both young artists joined Hot Boys, a hip-hop group. Hot Boys released an album in 1997 under the title Get It How U Live! And another in 1999, titled Guerrilla Warfare.
Lil Wayne debuted as a solo artist in 1999 with the album Tha Block Is Hot. He reached a lot of popularity with his following albums, especially the two-part Tha Carter and Tha Carter II, released in 2004 and 2005, respectively. That Carter III, released in 2008, sold over one million copies in the first week and won a Grammy. Songs like A Milli, Got Money, and Lollipop hit the Billboard Hot 100 and were hugely successful, boosting Wayne’s fame even more. In 2010, Lil Wayne released Rebirth, his seventh album, which went in a different direction and experimented with rap-rock, which was not well-received by the public or the critics.
In 2010, Lil Wayne was convicted for criminal possession of a weapon and had to serve eight months in jail, but in 2010 he also released his next album, I Am Not a Human Being, while he was in prison. 2011 saw the release of Tha Carter IV. Tha Carter V came out following a hiatus in 2018, followed by The Funeral in 2020. In 2018, Lil Wayne left Cash Money Records. He is currently the head of his own label, Young Money Entertainment.
Lil Wayne has sold over 120 million records, which puts him among the best-selling music artists of all time.
The rapper has five Grammy Awards, eleven BET Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, two MTV VMAs, and eight NAACP Image Awards. In addition, he holds the record as the male artist, overcoming even Elvis Presley, with most entries to the Hot 100 charts with 109 songs.
