Today, we are interviewing Margarita Shamrakov, a singer, songwriter, producer, and poet who lives in New York City. Margarita writes, records, performs and produces all of the project’s music in the recording studio.
How did you get into what you do right now? Please tell us more about your journey.
Lots of people inspired me, but most of all, trying to express what I am feeling. And the feelings are very strong that words are not enough.
Who are your role models?
My role model would be JS Bach, the father of all classical music. What I admire about him, he was interested in writing music, and he was very prolific. He wrote music every single day.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by the sky, the ocean, nature, people, and friendships.
Please tell us about your music.
I wanted to tell you about my new song that I am working on. It is called Radium Girls.
It is about Radium girls in the 1920’s in NJ, NYC, Chicago, Ottawa. The girls were working as dial painters in Radium factories. Radium was considered safe and beneficial, although there were warning signs. All the girls got poisoned by radium and eventually died.
Radium is a chemical element with the symbol Ra and atomic number 88. It is the sixth element in group 2 of the periodic table, also known as the alkaline earth metals. All isotopes of radium are highly radioactive. The most stable isotope is radium-226, which has a half-life of 1600 years and decays into radon gas (specifically the isotope radon-222). When radium decays, ionizing radiation is a product, which can excite fluorescent chemicals and cause radioluminescence.
Dead girls’ bones will glow for 3200 years. The death that they have experienced was very painful.
I am writing lyrics currently and will record lyrics this week for the song; however, I wanted to share my instrumental.
I wanted to tell more people about these women because they have suffered so much, and they were very brave because they fought back very big corporations to finally tell the world that radium is highly radioactive and will kill you. Therefore you and I are safe now.

Looking back, what’s one thing you wish you understood better before you ever got started?
I think that everything is hard work. There are no free lunches. If there are, you will pay for them later. We are here for a moment on this planet, and it’s sad, but at the same time, would you want to live forever? We all get old, and we all will die.
What keeps you going when things get tough?
What keeps me going is my daughter in hard moments, sometimes I live for her.
