We had the pleasure of interviewing JJ, a.k.a. Jake Joss, media professional, creator, food explorer, and musician. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
Hi Jake, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about your journey.
Hi, music has always been a part of me since childhood. My siblings and I grew up watching programs like “Antakshari” and “Saregama” on TV. I had a keen interest in musical instruments and somehow learned to play the keyboard and harmonica on my own. In fact, I won a few competitions both at school and college. While Hindi Pop and Bollywood were what everyone enjoyed at home, I was also pulled towards Rap songs (thanks to Baba Sehgal) and Ghazals (courtesy Jagjit Singh and Pankaj Udhas).
My musical journey was revived after my first daughter Alithea was born. I composed my first original song for her called “Doosra Pyaar.” Sung by both me and my wife, Sonya M.H., the song was all about what we, as parents, want to tell her about our undying love and the simple expectations that we hold for her.
Alithea and I went on to record our first poopbuster song together, called “Birdie.” We have released a few more original songs called “The Cuckoo Song” and “Happy Independence Day” since then.
Please tell us about your latest song, Eri Aali.
Eri Aali is our latest fusion song from the house of Original Sing. The song is based on a bandish from Raag Yaman called “Eri aali piya bin,” which expresses the restlessness felt by a girl without her beloved, who has traveled to a distant land.
Our song, set in the metaverse, gives it a father-daughter twist, where the father has traveled to Kuala Lumpur for work and is being missed dearly by his daughters. The song goes on to describe the hardships that come with moving to a new place amidst the pandemic and endears upon the hope of a brighter future once the family is reunified.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I don’t think I am successful yet. I wish to compose a lot more songs and provide my daughter with all the support to make her a great singer. I hope more and more people hear our music and like it.
