Gifted musician Elizabeth Johnson grabs the attention of music lovers with her debut single ‘Crazy Love’

We had the pleasure of interviewing E.J (Elizabeth Johnson), a singer, songwriter, and published author. Her personal life often inspires her songwriting. Born in Nigeria, Lagos, E.J moved to London, UK, in her early twenties to study and pursue creative arts. She is known for her creative penmanship as a novelist and a superb storyteller. Her debut album Reminiscence features her debut single, Crazy Love, and some other titles not yet released, such as, In my dreams, I’ll pretend and get stepping to it. She is currently in the studio working on more songs for the album. In my dreams is scheduled for release on the 28th of February.

Here are the excerpts from the interview.

Hi Elizabeth, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about your journey.

Hi, I am a British Nigerian singer, and I fell in love with singing when I was 14. When I was younger, singing was all I wanted to do. Anything creative inspired me, and I wished I could sing all day and write all night. I remember when I was in school, I would sing, and my friends would tell me not to sing. I had thought I had a horrible voice until a neighbor heard me singing one day and complimented my voice.

I joined my church choir shortly afterward. At first, I was just happy to be part of the choir, but soon I was approached and offered a more leading role where I sometimes sang special numbers. It was daunting at first because the church congregation ran into thousands. I was shy and afraid to stand in front of so many people, but I pushed through my fears as I also enjoyed singing a lot. This experience boosted my confidence and opened more avenues to music in general. I learned to train my voice, sing duets, lead songs, and engage with the audience, and it was just really fun.

I remained in the choir from my teenage years through to graduating from university. Then I saw an advert from the Nigerian national theater troop. I applied and went to the audition, I was accepted and given a leading role, and for a short period, I enjoyed performing to the public in theaters. I soon realized that songwriting came easy to me as I started to hear tunes in my head, and I just filled the melodies with lyrics.

I listened to music by various artists, from gospel music to artists such as Whitney, Mariah, Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Michael Bolton, Lady Gaga, Adele, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Afro beats from a variety of artists, to name a few.

Life, as usual, got in the way of the pursuit of creating music. I got a 9-5 job, and to an extent working met some of my basic needs, but the passion to be creative was a force within me that couldn’t be silenced.

I found an agent, and I started to write more songs and save up more. I believed in myself, and I knew I had to go for it, backed myself to put my music creation out to the world. A few people suggested going on reality shows. That, for me, was a lottery ticket.

I didn’t want to place the probability of my pursuing music in the hands of any gatekeeper. So I saved up, found a great recording studio and a wonderful producer Sophie, and started my music recording journey from there, and now we’re here.

Please tell us about your song, Crazy Love.

Crazy Love is about a situation I was involved in that, looking back on it, could have been an amazing relationship. The love I felt in that situation was really crazy to me at the time. I don’t play games when it comes to matters of the heart, but it seems we live in a world where this is the norm. I had, at that time, found myself trapped in a game of love that I didn’t want to be part of but didn’t at the time have the strength to walk away from. It became a battle between my head and my heart, and in the end, my head won. So if you can relate to the feeling of knowing you want to be treated better even though you love a person and find the will to shut the door and walk away, then you can understand the emotions and intensity behind the song.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Just believing in myself, writing more songs, connecting with people, listening to advice that has worked, promotion, promotion, promotions, and the rest is up to luck if you have a good product.
