Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Shayla Johnson, also known as Shay J, a journalist, media guru, and a highly sought after speaker and host, based in Denver, Colorado. A graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy of New York, she has conducted interviews with everyone from politicians to athletes to local leaders. Shay J is changing the narrative to amplify the voices of people.
Please tell us about what it is that you do.
I take control of crowds and ask questions we really want the answers to. The Mayor of Denver has given me credit for changing the tide in his election because I wasn’t afraid to go after the important questions.
Journalism has always been my passion, but now more than ever, I know how just important truthful, reliable information is. And I do it for one reason…
I do it all for the culture. When performative leadership is running rampant, it’s hard to know who is taking action outside of social media. And even though I love to talk the talk as the co-host of Free Think Zone, I’ve made it my mission to put action behind my words as the:
- Founder of CTN Media
- Co-chair of Communications for the Denver NAACP
- Creative Director for the Black Business Initiative
- Board member of Make A Chess Move
I know what it is to be a Black woman in Corporate America.
Whether I’m being highlighted on Tamron Hall Show, Roland Martin Uncensored, or CNN, the motive behind my actions stays the same, fighting for our voices to be heard. Nothing can change unless we demand it.
You mentioned you are changing The Narrative, Please tell us about that!
I know how powerful we are when we are seen and heard in a true and authentic light. Before I started hosting events, I was graduating from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy of New York and creating my own stage plays. Putting my feelings and words out there for everyone to hear was one of the scariest yet most gratifying moments of my life. Because it was there, I learned just how powerful our thoughts can be when we give them to the world, and I knew I needed to help others do that, too. Throughout the years since, I’ve cultivated a relationship with the community to become a voice they trust so I can fight for our culture and make sure our people are highlighted and lifted.
