Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Jeffrey Dorrian, founder of TheSoapGuy.com. The Soap Guy is a family-owned and operated bath and body company.
Please tell us about your journey.
I started making soap 18 years ago at the kitchen sink. This was a hobby at first, and as sales increased every year, it turned into a full-time business. Our first online sales were on eBay. We then developed our own website specializing in private label soap manufacturing, catering almost exclusively to other small businesses. Most handmade soap manufacturers catered to large businesses and had very high minimums. We saw a desperate need for someone to help small and medium-size businesses develop their own lines. After much trial and error, we found our niche, and our business began to grow. We started to get feedback from our customers about other custom items that they had a hard time sourcing in smaller quantities. As we stepped into these markets, we added bath bombs, sugar scrubs, and body butter.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
We believe that quality products are the key to growing a successful business. There have been many challenges along the way, and our loyal customers have stuck with us throughout. We continue to add new artisan soap each year at our website.
Any message for our readers.
If I had one piece of advice for any new soap startup, it would be to be prepared to spend at least fifty percent of your time on your business’s marketing aspect. There is so much competition in today’s market you must also find a distinct element of your product to differentiate from your competitors. Good luck and happy soaping!
