Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Jing Wang, a sustainable designer and owner of an eco jewelry brand ‘Upcycle with Jing.‘ She is based in Helsinki, Finland.
Please tell us about yourself.
I create unique, beautiful jewelry from PET plastic bottles I found on Helsinki’s streets. I am a Graduate of Design from Aalto University, School of Art, Design and Architecture, Helsinki, having passed out in 2018.
Can you please tell us more about your journey?
My foray into design actually began with an education in Industrial Design in China. But, only when I began to study industrial design did I realize that it wasn’t my calling at all.
In fact, the irresponsible exploitation of resources used in Industrial Design left me yearning to design and create something sustainably. While living in China and India, I was also appalled by the prevalent use of single-use plastic bags and bottles that littered streets, landfills, and even the oceans.
Upcycling a pollutant material like plastic became my lifelong quest, which is what today has transformed into Upcycle with Jing, a thriving upcycled jewelry store online.
Nothing gives me more joy than to transform an ordinary PET plastic bottle by hand, changing it into a sustainable, unique, and very beautiful art piece that someone will truly enjoy wearing.
Please tell us about ‘Upcycle with Jing.’
At Upcycle with Jing, we want you to look and feel good when wearing our jewelry. Every one of our jewelry pieces has been handcrafted from PET plastic bottles we found on the streets of Helsinki.
For too long now, the environment has been ravaged in search of precious metals used to make traditional forms of jewelry. With our jewelry, not only will you wear an exquisitely beautiful earring, hairpiece, or brooch, you also give a second life to plastic that can otherwise be left to pollute the environment.
Our jewelry is inspired by nature. Many of our pieces are a tribute to the beauty and delicateness of various flowers. With each piece handcrafted to finessed perfection, they are perfect for dressing up or as a thoughtful gift for a loved one, on Mother’s Day, Women’s Day, a birthday, or for a wedding.
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
Turn my passion into a business; be patient and keep creating what I love; pay attention & be inspired by everything around you, always write down inspiration whenever it comes; keep pitching myself to different people, let others know what I do; networking.
