Please tell us about your journey.

Well, I am a product of my experiences. I spent years of my existence angry and empty due to sexual trauma until I realized that pain could be a precursor to success. If instead of wallowing and abiding in pain, you face it headfirst with a strategy, learn to accept what you cannot change, heal internally as well as externally then use the tools grasped during that process to uplift yourself outward one step at a time, one day at a time then eventually you will begin to see the light. Once light shone, I moved into transitioning into what I chose to be. Along the journey, I birthed 2 beautiful kids and found even more reason to survive. I began volunteering, doing community, education, and nonprofit work and advocacy, which led to the titles you see before you.

I graduated Cumae Laude from Berkeley College with a BA in Business Management. I hold a Summa Cumae Laude Masters degree, Honorary Masters Certifications in Nonprofit Management, Advanced Project Management from Walden University, and a Six Sigma White belt Certification. Today I am a survivor who gained 2 older children and an amazing husband, and an unwavering passion for helping others through their healing process. I love the work I do with children, and I look forward to continuing my work in education and human civil rights.

Please tell us about your book ‘Our Friends, The Dragons.’

My book’s idea came up years ago while home with the kids, and today it’s a representation just of the pure, unfiltered uninhibited love they share. I wanted to highlight its pureness and engage a child’s mind to go on the journey the children take to close their eyes and see the dragons and to bask in every page’s details with Kaela and Nason. I believe a child’s imagination is a seed to so many things, it’s possibility to propel into reality is astounding. I believe whatever we can drum up in our minds can be presented in a live 3D form the same way a cellphone, computer etc. were created from just pure thought. So I want children to see what some deem impossible as a possibility, and I hope to help spark that with this book.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

1. Accept it – Accept whatever you faced and then Stand. Begin to realize it wasn’t your fault. Stop blaming yourself, then say I now have the power to choose to make my pain a precursor to my victory by way of healing and then taking the bull by its horns.

2. I realized I am stronger than I thought – I understood that even after it all happened, I still had fight left in me. Find your fight and push. I knew I wasn’t done because on every attempt to perform suicide (the numerous times I attempted that), I found it hard to push that knife; part of me was still fighting to stay alive. So as I sat thinking one day, I asked myself, what if I chose the opposite of suicide? What if I chose to live! To fight? I remember saying, God, why can’t I do it? I think he was saying this isn’t the way.

3. Live – Choose to live how you want! As you heal, yes, it is a process (therapy, etc.) but choose to make small steps towards a life u envisioned for yourself while healing. Begin that business plan, study for the LSAT or MCATs- whatever that thing is that you have purposed in your heart, that dream that goal you can’t see your life without, go pursue it! As you find yourself, you’ll begin to realize…I am doing it… it’s all me. I feel like me again.
