Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Nicholas Bragg. He builds guitars and sells custom merchandise of Strange Customs. Nicholas started Strange Customs as a way to show his love for the craft of building and playing quality instruments! He builds all of the guitars and personally makes sure that they meet the quality standards.
Please tell us about your journey.
Strange Customs has been in the making for a very long time! I’m 20 years old, and this is the first time I’ve ever created a company to sell my builds. I started building my own guitars at 17. I learned the ins and outs of instruments while working as a tech in my hometown of Charleston, West Virginia. I always made sure I was building something that would catch your eyes and ears; by using the best products on the market, I was able to build some of the most beautiful and reliable guitars. The best part is that I’ve been able to make them affordable! I do all of the work myself and put pride into my work! Back in November of 2020, I was able to sponsor a band in Seattle called Nova Fracture. They are a great group that also makes some killer tunes! I played live music for a while but sadly had to retire from the dream. I eventually started working as a car salesman.
I just wanna make great instruments that the world will remember! 90% of my builds are one of a kind, I am working on a production run currently! At the moment, we are sold out of our guitars, but we have plenty of awesome merch online!
What inspired you to start your company, ‘Strange Customs.’
I love what I do, and my work has shown for that! I built this company from nothing, and the support from musicians and other music shops has shown me that all the hardships are always worth it! I really wanna thank Nova Fracture for showing love and support! They love their instruments and plan on playing them for years to come!
For me, creating custom guitars was never about profit. It was about showing the world what it feels like to play something genuine and high quality! Everything in a Strange Customs Guitar was done by hand, with care and passion. When you pick up a Strange Custom, you can feel the passion in your hands, belting through with each note played!
What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?
I found that just doing what I love was all the success that I need! When I started, I would take my guitars to the shop I worked at and let coworkers/employees give me their honest opinions and build off of that! More recently, I’ve really found joy in allowing local bands to get a chance at playing my instruments live! I really love giving back to the music scene; they are what makes this possible!
