Something-about-Sammy

Hi Blaine Sims!  Welcome to my blog!  I am SO glad that you are here, and my readers will get to know you more.

Tell us a few things about yourself.

I was born, raised, and live in New Hampshire. For the past several years, I’ve contemplated a move to sunny Florida and anticipate it taking place soon. I’ve been married twice and am living the single life at this time. My three adult children, two girls, and a boy have given me much joy throughout their lives. I enjoy the social scene. I am a cat aficionado. My current one, Whitman, is quite savvy. I hold two patents and love helping others. I served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and have an honorable discharge.

When you’re not writing, what kinds of books are you reading?

I’ll be honest and tell readers I have not read many books of late. I don’t have a favorite author, but after tackling writing, I have the utmost respect and admiration for those who write. The last book I read is titled Six Days of Impossible by Dr. Robert Adams. He takes the reader through the intense Navy SEALS BUD/s training, concentrating on what is known as “Hell Week.”

What was the inspiration for writing Something About Sammy?

A friend of mine experienced a life-altering and challenging event. I spent weeks in an effort to help him deal with the situation. He came up with the idea of writing about it, and it blossomed. We’ve been collaborating, as we both feel the story needs to be told. The project has given him a sense of renewed purpose and worth.

How long does it take you to write a novel?

This is my first writing venture. I’ve worked on this novel for a year and a half.

What is your favorite genre to write in? Why?

Fiction — because of the opportunity to dream and be creative.

Tell us about your current writing projects?

With the exception of Something About Sammy, I’m not working on any projects at this time. This endeavor has taken a life of its own.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Research and use software resources available such as ProWritingAid. When you hit a brick wall, take all the time you need to refresh. Don’t lose heart and don’t let others bring you down. When moments of despair are thrust upon you, remember the motto of the Navy SEALS, “Never quit!” I heard Ernest Hemmingway said, “I rewrote A Farewell to Arms a thousand times.” People read and hear about thinking outside the box. Well, it needs to be done at every juncture. Don’t suppress those “Eureka!” moments. If you think one day, “I’ll sell more books by offering a cute, free kitten with every purchase,” you might be on to something. It doesn’t have to be a free kitten — improvise.

What would you like readers to take away from Something About Sammy?

That we, as the human race, need to be more tolerant, accepting, respectful, and understanding of each other as a whole. Instead of competing against one another, we need to come together and cohabitate as one, for we are in essence.
