Musician and Songwriter Alex Jeffery’s song ‘Kitchen Table’ won the ‘2022 Music Video of the Year’ at the annual ISSA.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Alex Jeffery, a musician and songwriter from De Pere, Wisconsin.

At ten, he began teaching himself how to play guitar on a hand-me-down Fender Stratocaster. His love for music and words has followed him throughout his life and eventually convinced him to make a move to Nashville, TN, in the summer of 2016. His ability to tell a story that captivates the listener or reader is an exceptional talent among the many other musicians that call “Music City” home. He has written and performed with many other hit artists and songwriters throughout his career. His debut single “Kitchen Table” won runner-up in the 2019 CMT songwriter contest and, most recently, “2022 Music Video of the Year” at the annual ISSA (International Singer Songwriter Association) award show in Atlanta, GA. “Kitchen Table,” as well as his entire debut album “Learning to Say Goodbye,” showcases his storytelling abilities.

Here are the excerpts from the interview.

Hi Alex, Great to have you with us today! Please share with our readers about your journey.

Music has always been my safe space and solitude. No matter what experiences I go through in life, I always try to find or write a song that I can relate to the situation. Music helps me understand people, how the world works, and what life is like for those around me. I will never forget the first open-mic night I played an original song and how many people came up to me and said they connected with it. It was so cool to see what I felt when I wrote the song could resonate with so many others. I have worked hard to get where I am and continue to do so.

Please tell us about your song, Kitchen Table

“Kitchen Table” is a special song for many people but holds an extra special place in my heart. The song was written by JoyBeth Taylor, Katrina Burgoyne, Josh Willcutts, and myself. We were sitting at my cabin, eating breakfast, in Northern Wisconsin for an annual songwriting retreat that I host, and I started thinking about all the memories that I have had with my family at the cabin, specifically, around the table that was built by my great-great-grandfather and still used to this day. You could see marks, scratches, and dents that all seemed to tell a different story and were ingrained in the wood. As I told others a story, I realized that every family I could think of probably had many cherished memories surrounding their kitchen tables. That is how the song came to be. A true, real-life moment that we decided needed to become a song.

We wrote the song in about two hours, laughing at the memories we all had and enjoying the company. The fact that we wrote the song around the table we were talking about is very special. I decided I wanted to put this song out as my first single as an artist because of how close I felt to the song, and I am so glad I did. It has led to so many opportunities and recognition by those in the industry and continues to be a highly requested fan favorite. It was well enough received that it won the 2022 ISSA Music Video of the Year award held in Atlanta, GA. For it to have as much success as it has already without any outside promotion until now is huge, and I cannot wait to see what comes next.

What are the strategies that helped you become successful in your journey?

Authenticity, honesty, and hard work are all things that I try to implement in every aspect of life. I feel like being who you are and being transparent with the world is so essential to having a long career in anything you choose to do, music and art especially. When it comes to self-expression and honesty, it was hard for me to get to that point, but once I did, I destroyed the fear of validation and was able to truly understand why I created music. Music was a way for me to heal and celebrate the life I live, and I want that for everyone that hears my songs.

Any message for our readers.

Family is so important. Make sure to hold the ones you love a little tighter every day, and never let your ego or pride get in the way of the things in life that should be cherished. Too often, we overlook the importance of small moments by worrying too much about the big ones.

Fantastic! So tell us, how can people find out more about you?
