His early life and career beginnings

His mother was a French teacher, and his father worked for the Department of Education and Skills. He is the eldest of four children and grew up in Ballintemple, Cork, alongside his siblings. He is from a Catholic family and attended the Catholic secondary school Presentation Brothers College.
In 1996, he began studying law at University College Cork but failed his first-year exams because he had no drive for law studies.
Cillian Murphy’s performance started in secondary school, where he participated in a drama by Corcadorca Theatre Company. It was an experience he cherished and decided to chase. In 2002, Murphy portrayed pandemic survivor Jim in a lead role on the British horror film 28 Days Later. It was a commercial success grossing over $82.7 worldwide and receiving many positive reviews. His impressive performance earned him a nomination for Best Newcomer at the 8th Empire Awards.
In the 2003 Irish comedy crime film Intermission, he starred as John. The film was well-received by critics and garnered €2.5 million at the Irish box office.
Murphy’s acting prowess earned him critical success, and in 2005, his supporting role as Jackson Rippner in Batman Begins was outstanding. He was supposed to audition for the lead role of Batman but considered his physique unfit for the part. He jumped at the supporting role which, earned him several awards nominations.
Murphy has starred in several films and theatre such as The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Breakfast on Pluto, Sunshine, Watching the Detectives, Hippie Hippie Shake, The Edge of Love, Perrier’s Bounty, A Quite Place Part II, and a host of others.

Cillian Murphy’s personal life

He married his longtime girlfriend, Yvonne McGuiness, in 2004. They have two sons named Malachy and Aran.
Murphy grew up a catholic but is now an atheist. Having no interest in the celebrity scene, he is reserved and has managed to keep his life private, away from prying eyes. He attends functions alone and travels without creating a fuss of involving an entourage.
