Andie was born to Pauline Johnston, a former music teacher, and Mario St. Pierre MacDowell, a lumber executive. Her parents divorced when she was six, and her father remarried when she was eight.

Andie made her film debut as Jane Porter in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan and Lord of the Apes, a 1984 adventure film, before she portrayed Ann Bishop Mullany in the 1989 American independent drama film Sex, Lies, and Videotape.
In 1990, Andie starred in a romantic comedy film Green Card as Brontë’ Parrish, in The Object of Beauty, a comedy-drama film in 1991 as Tina Lesley Bartholemew, and in Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994 as Carrie. The British film was successful at the time and received Academy Award Nominations.

Andie MacDowell married a rancher and model, Paul Qualley, in 1986, and they had three children. She reconnected with her high school classmate Rhett Hartzog in 1999 through her sister Julia, and they married on November 10, 2001. The marriage lasted until 2004 when they called it quits.
