Personal Life

Swit has Polish descent. She graduated from Katharine Gibbs School in Montclair and first worked in clerical jobs. Swit studied drama with Gene Frankel and trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

In 1983, she married actor Dennis Holahan. They got divorced in 1995. She did not marry again.

Professional Life

Swit started her career on stage. Then, in 1969, she arrived in Hollywood and began working in television. She appeared in Hawaii Five-O, Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, and Mannix.

In 1972, Swit took the role of Major Margaret Houlihan, known as Hot Lips. She was the head nurse of a mobile army hospital during the Korean War. The series became a huge hit, and Swit’s character was also highly popular, and she would remain with the show for all eleven seasons between 1972 and 1983. Swit and Alan Alda were the only actors to appear in the pilot and the finale, and in general, the actress was featured in all episodes but 11 out of 256.

In 1981, Swit was cast as Christine Cagney in the movie pilot for Cagney & Lacey but could not keep the role due to contracts.

The actress would have a guest-starring role in shows like Bonanza, The Love Boat, Password, Gunsmoke, Pyramid, The Muppett Show, and others.

In 1988, the actress hosted Korean War-The Untold Story, a documentary about this historical event. In 1992, she hosted Those Incredible Animals. In 2008, she retired from television but appeared in Play the Flute as Mrs. Kincaid. While she stopped working on screen, she remained in theater, taking roles on stage. She was in Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks in Buffalo in 2017.

Swit has published two books. In 1986, she released A Needlepoint Scrapbook. In 2017, she published SwitHeart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit.

Trivia

After her work in M*A*S*H, actor Harry Morgan became Swit’s neighbor. The two lived close by until 2011, when Morgan passed away. Throughout her life, Swit has also been close to Alan Alda.

In 1998, she was in Diagnosis: Murder. Between 1999 and 2004, she was in Hollywood Squares. She went back for the 2002 M*A*S*H: 30th Anniversary Reunion.

The actress did voice acting for Batman: The Animated Series. In addition, she did the voice for Marcia Cates in the episode Mad as a Hatter.

In 1991, she won the the Sarah Siddons Award for her work in theater in Chicago.

In 1989, Swit got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Swit was one of the few M*A*S*H members to visit South Korea, not counting members like Alan Alda, who served there in the army in the 50s.
