Who is Gemma Chan?

Gemma Chan is an English actress. She grew up in London and attended the Newstead Wood School, a girl-exclusive school. Afterward, she went to study law at Worcester College, Oxford, after which she decided to follow her true passion and started a career in acting instead. She enrolled in Drama Centre London. Gemma was then cast in various supporting roles in such popular TV series as True Love, Fresh Meat, Bedlam, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Sherlock, and Doctor Who. She has also appeared in various independent films such as Belles Families (2015), Submarine (2010), and Exam (2009). 

She has also had minor roles in blockbusters films such as Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014). She also starred as a servile anthropomorphic in the popular science fiction series Humans from 2015 to 2018, which garnered her critical praise from watchers of the series.

Early life before fame:

Gemma was born in Guy’s Hospital, London. His mother was a pharmacist who was raised in Greenock, Scotland, and her dad was an engineer who grew up in Hong Kong. After Gemma’s mother’s parents emigrated from Hong Kong, they settled in Scotland. 

Gemma attended the Newstead Wood Schoo for Girls in Orpington, London. Following this, she went to study jurisprudence at Worcester College, located in Oxford. 

Early career roles:

Gemma Chan made her professional actorial debut in 2006 when she appeared in Horror Channel’s miniseries When Evil Calls. Gemma was also one of the competitors in the first series of the reality series Project Catwalk. Gemma also made her stage debut in the British premiere of Bertolt Brecht’s play, Turandot, at the Hampstead Theatre in London, in 2008. The very next year, she appeared in a 2009 special for the BBC’s series Doctor Who, in the episode titled “The Waters of Mars,” where she portrayed a geologist named Mia Bennett. This very episode went on to win the Hugo Award. The very same year, she starred in the British psychological thriller Exam, which premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. The reviews for the movie were mixed. 

Breakthrough roles:

In 2014 Gemma was cast in the action-thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, which was a financial success. She then went to appear in Lond Fields as Petronella (2018), which turned out to be a box-office bomb.

In more recent years, she starred with Meryl Streep in the comedy Let Them All Talk (2020). In the movie, Gemma portrayed Karen, a literary agent who has a romance with her client’s nephew. Later on, she appeared in the mega-popular Marvel Studios superhero movie Eternals (2021). She played Sersi, a member of the titular race. This marked her second role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after appearing in Captain Marvel (2019).

Personal life:

Gemma dated the English comedian Jack Whitehall for a couple of years (2011-2017). Since then, she’s been in a relationship with the English actor Dominic Cooper 2018. They both reside in London.
