Knight started working in theater at the age of 12. He was part of the Children’s Theatre Company. He studied briefly at the University of St. Thomas but dropped out to pursue a career in acting.

Professional Life

The actor started working on stage early on and got experience. As an adult, he moved to New York City to work on stage. He was in Noises Off in 2001 on Broadway. Next, he was in Tartuffe in 2003 and also in Scattergood, which earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination for Oustanding Featured Actor in a Play. Finally, he starred in Boy in 2004, with these last two being off-Broadway productions.

However, his on-screen breakthrough role would come in 2005 with the role of Dr. George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy. O’Malley started out as a surgical intern and worked up to resident, forming strong relationships with notable characters like Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Izzie Stevens, and Alex Karev, portrayed by Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, and Justin Chambers. The actor returned for several seasons but would not return for the sixth one. For his work, he received a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

In 2009, he was in Parade and later appeared on Broadway with A Life in the Theatre in 2010, opposite Patrick Stewart.
