Personal Life

Bauer was born Esteban Ernesto Echevarría Samson. He was the son of a pilot and a schoolteacher. His grandfather was a Jewish man who immigrated from Germany to escape World War II. In 1960, his family moved to the United States, specifically Miami, Florida. The actor adopted the name Steven rather than Esteban. He studied at Miami Dade Community College and the University of Miami. Here, he met actor Ray Liotta. Later he studied with Stella Adler alongside his then-partner Melanie Griffith.

Bauer was married to Melanie Griffith between 1981 and 1989, to Ingrid Anderson between 1989 and 1991, Christiana Boney between 1992 and 2002, and to Paulette Miltimore between 2003 and 2012. He has two sons, born to Melanie Griffith and Ingrid Anderson.

Professional Life

Bauer’s first big role was in ¿Qué Pasa, USA?, a bilingual sitcom. He was on the series between 1977 and 1979. In 1980, he was in From Here to Eternity. For these projects, he was known as and credited as Rocky Echevarría. In 1981, he starred in She’s In the Army Now, starring Melanie Griffith.

In 1982, he was cast as Manny Ribera in Scarface, starring Al Pacino. This earned him a Golden Globe nomination. In 1986, he appeared in Running Scared and in Sword of Gideon.

In 1990, he played Enrique Camarena in Drug Wars: The Camarena Story alongside Benicio del Toro. In 1990 he also got the leading role for the fourth season of Wiseguy.

He appeared in The Lost City, Primal Fear, Traffic, Burn Notice, and Awakened, mostly focusing on crime dramas and action flicks. In 2011, he would appear in Breaking Bad, where he portrayed Don Eladio, a Mexican drug lord.

He appeared in Ray Donovan as Avi, an ex-Mossad agent. In 2017, he once again played Don Eladio in Better Call Saul, the prequel to Breaking Bad. He also was featured in Queen of the South.

Bauer has been in dozens of shows and films. Some of the latest film roles include Women Is Losers, My Dead Dad, and Love on the Rock in 2021.

In regards to television, he also has an impressive curriculum. In 2012, he was in Common Law, followed by roles in The Mentalist and more. He was part of the main cast of Ray Donovan. In Better Call Saul, he has reprised his role as Don Eladio Vuente several times between 2017 and 2022, appearing in seasons 3, 5, and 6. In 2018, he was in Goliath, followed by Supergirl in 2019 and NCIS in 2021.

Trivia

He was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Scarface in 1984. He has also been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for TV for his role in Drug Wars: The Camarena Story in 1990.
He won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Traffic in 2000.
