Who is Ron Perlman?

Ronald “Ron” Perlman is an American actor. He is mostly recognized for his role as Salvatore in The Name of the Rose (1986), Amoukar in Quest for Fire (1981), One in The City of Lost Children (1995), Vincent in the TV series Beauty and the Beast (1987-1990), he won a Golden Globe Award for his role in the series, he also played Johner in Alien Resurrection (1997). He also played the character of Hellboy in Hellboy (2004) and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He also appeared as Benedict Drak in Don’t Look Up (2021), as well as playing Clay Morrow in Sons of Anarchy (2008-2013), as well as being Nino in Drive (2011).

Early life before fame:

Ronald Perlman was born in Washington Heights. His Mother, Dorothy (1921-2018), was a municipal employee, while his father, Bertram “Bert” Perlmann, was a television repairman and a jazz drummer (1919-1969). 

Most of his family is Jewish. Having originally come from Poland and Hungary, Ron has had a Bar Mitzvah ceremony.

In an interview in 1988, Ron said, “it was not a bad childhood but I have a perception of myself that was, I was terribly overweight s a young child, which led to feelings of low self-esteem.” This fact has led to Perlman accepting roles that have weird-looking characters; he has stated that “these sorts of deformed people who are very endeearing are fun to play.”. Ron had a close relationship with his dad, who ultimately pushed him to follow his dream of becoming an actor after he saw his son perform in the college production of Guys and Dolls. 

Ronald graduated from Washington High School in 1967.

Professional career:

Ron Perlman began his acting career as a stage actor appearing in various stage productions. He finally made his film debut in Quest for Fire (1981). After various other smaller and minor roles in various films and television series, Ron was thinking of abandoning his career entirely. But then came his breakout role, Vincent, on the television series Beauty and the Beast, where he starred alongside actress Linda Hamilton. The series ran for three seasons (1987-1990). The role earned Perlman a Golden Globe Award for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television series in 1989.

His later roles include such films as Highlander: The Series, Blade II, Star Trek: Nemesis, Sleepwalkers, and Desperation.

His most famous role is probably playing Hellboy in the two Hellboy films from (2004-2008). 

His most recent roles have been in Sons of Anarchy, where he played Clay Morrow, as well as playing Wes Chandler for two seasons of the American crime drama series StartUp.

Personal life:

 Perlman was married to Opal Perlman, a jewelry designer, although the pair separated in 2019 and later filed for divorce. He also has a son, Delroy Edwards.
