Hamm began his career as an acting teacher, teaching, among others, acting to Ellie Kemper, known for her role in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Hamm was not able to find work as an actor for a while, but in 1995 he moved to Los Angeles to pursue it more seriously, although he failed to get work for several years as he worked as a waiter.
