Qualls was born Donald Joseph Qualls. At fourteen, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which stunted his growth. Nevertheless, he graduated from Coffee County Central High School and then attended King’s College London for a degree in English literature, and then enrolled at Belmont University in Nashville.
