His first film was in the 1986 film Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna, which helped him also get a role in the Spielberg 1987 film Empire of the Sun. The same year, he appeared in Mio in the Land of Faraway, an internationally produced fantasy film; however, Empire of the Sun launched him to greater fame.
He appeared in the 1989 Henry V and was in Treasure Island opposite Charlton Heston. Bale played Jim Hawkins. 1992 saw the release of the unsuccessful Disney musical film Newsies, followed by Swing Kids in 1993 and Little Women in 1994. In 1995, he did voice acting for Pocahontas.

A breakthrough role that took him to new heights in his career was Patrick Bateman in American Psych. This was one of the first instances when Bale showed his commitment to the craft, exercising for months and altering his teeth to capture the character. The film was released in 2000, eventually achieving cult status.

The next years were not critically or commercially kind to Christian Bale, as he appeared in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Equilibrium, Reign of Fire, and other films that failed to reach any significant degree of success. In 2004, he starred in The Machinist, which involved losing 29 kg and changing his lifestyle to prepare, earning him significant attention.

Bale got one of the most successful and recognized roles in his career when he was chosen to be Bruce Wayne and Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy by Christopher Nolan. For this role, he trained extensively with weapons, regained the weight he had lost, and built a lot of muscle. Batman Begins was released in 2005, followed by the sequels, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
He appeared in Out of the Furnace, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Knight of Cups, and others, which received a mixed reception. In 2013, he appeared alongside Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Nero in ‘American Hustle’.

In 2015, he appeared alongside Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt in The Big Short.

The 2018 film Vice involved yet another body transformation for Bale’s portrayal of Dick Cheney, followed by Ford vs. Ferrari that required him to lose all the weight he had put on for the role of Cheney. Bale has stated he was done with weight shifts for roles after this.
The actor is scheduled to appear in 2022 Thor: Love and Thunder and has several projects lined up.
